We recently stayed at Auberge de la Baie, located just a short drive from the iconic Mont Saint Michel. Here's what you need to know: Pros: Great breakfast: fresh croissants out of the oven, cheese, ham, boiled eggs, jellies, chocolate croissants, lots of different types of coffee and teas. Great location: The proximity to Mont Saint Michel is a major plus. It’s convenient for those looking to explore the area without staying inside the more tourist-heavy zone. Ample parking: There’s plenty of space to park, which is often a challenge in the region. Helpful staff: The front desk lady was friendly and accommodating, which we appreciated after a long journey. Room as described: We booked a quadruple room for four people. It was exactly as advertised—basic but functional. Each guest receives one towel, and there’s liquid soap provided for both body and hair. Cons: Cleanliness concerns: When we entered the room, we were shocked to find around 20 flies buzzing inside. Unfortunately, this wasn't an isolated incident—all the rooms our group stayed in had the same issue. Reason for the flies? The hotel sits directly along the path of hundreds of sheep that cross in front of it day and night. While it’s charming to witness this pastoral tradition, it leaves the road covered in droppings—and apparently, it attracts a large number of flies. Limited comfort: The shower is very small, and there’s almost no space to put your personal items. While this might be expected from a no-frills accommodation, it was inconvenient for a group stay. Wish we had known: Had we known about the fly problem and the extremely basic amenities, we might have considered other options nearby. Final thoughts: If you're looking for an affordable stay close to Mont Saint Michel and don’t mind very simple accommodations with a few rustic downsides, Auberge de la Baie might suit you. However, for those expecting comfort and a clean, fly-free experience, I would recommend exploring other...

Read moreThe room we had was quite basic and charmless, with a motel style outside entrance but that was the only negative to this hotel (and it was spotlessly clean). The location is fantastic if you want to be just a bit off the beaten path. It sits in a tiny crossroad community, about a mile removed from the gated cluster of hotels located at the Mont St Michel causeway. You can leave your car at the auberge and avoid the expensive abbey parking lots. It is about a 2 mile walk across a field full of grazing sheep to reach the causeway and abbey shuttle bus. The view is stunning in the day and after dark with the abbey lit up it feels like you have traveled back in time. We felt like we were miles away from the crowds and craziness. The small restaurant served an excellent dinner. And the biggest treat of all is the herd of 1000 sheep that pass by this hotel twice a day while you enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace. ...
