Hôtel Alaia — Hotel in Bayonne

We booked here, for a change, normally we drop over the border to San Sebastian. We thought it gives the opportunity of some peace and a few days in the hills, plus a day trip over for some great tapas. We booked a Studio, as they are described as larger rooms, whilst very clean and tidy it's all about perception (what is large). To add to this we overlooked what turned out to be the local "rat run" so it was quite noisy, with trucks passing very early in the morning.||Insult was added to injury when the glass shower door fell off whilst my wife was showering injuring her foot.||When I reported this, the 1st question was "Did the door break?" not was she injured,||plus " We will have the door fixed for this evening"||At which I suggested we would rather have another room, I was told " WE are full this evening, but you can change to another room which has just been vacated"||When I accepted this I was shown to an unprepared room and told " if you move your thing in we will have it prepared for this evening"||truly service with a smile!!!!!||As I expected the bill was presented in full and no mention was made of our mishap||not the best service I have...

This is not quite a hotel nor an apartment block. You rent a room by the night but have access from outside so have no need to use the central facilities. This may be a good idea because breakfast is expensive for what is provided and there are cafes nearby offering better and cheaper. The accommodation is quaint, with the shower cubicle and wash-basin in the bedroom. However, this all works perfectly well; which is more than can be said for the air-conditioning. The location is very good both for peace and quiet in the village and for the wider area, which is pretty. Would use it agin if going...

Popular place to stay. The hotel grounds and room were well maintained and clean. We had a small studio room which included a small kitchenette. Staff are very professional, approachable and always greeted us with a warm smile.

The village of Ascain is lovely and is surrounded by several walking trails. The town has everything one would need, a small grocery store, an amazing bakery, a few cafe bars and restaurants.

Many small villages within a 10-40min drive, all with their own unique charm.
