Our recent family stay at Club Med Opio in France was profoundly disappointing and, frankly, felt like a scam. We travelled with our 2-year-old daughter expecting a premium, international, family-friendly experience, but instead encountered a cascade of problems and poor service from beginning to end.|Arrival Nightmare:|Our negative experience started immediately. Arriving about an hour and a half before the official check-in, we inquired about early access to our room. We were charged a significant €88 fee, only to then be told our room wasn't ready and they had no idea when it would be. The receptionist was dismissive and rude, showing no empathy for our situation with a young child. His only "solution" was a refund coupled with cutting off our wristbands and demanding we leave the resort immediately. This felt incredibly hostile and unreasonable. We chose to leave and return later rather than pay €88 for literally nothing. Additionally, we were charged for parking with zero explanation on how it worked or even the provision of a gate ticket. We only discovered this omission when trapped in the car park later, needing to call reception for help.|Failed Family Promises:|A major draw for us was the childcare. Upon arrival, we were bluntly told there were no spaces left in the Mini Club for our daughter. Worse still, this meant we were barred from using any dedicated children's facilities (like indoor play areas), as they were exclusively for those lucky enough to get a paid spot. No alternative activities were offered for our toddler, even on rainy days. In a particularly upsetting incident at the public playground, Mini Club staff actively ignored our daughter when she naturally approached their group to play – incredibly unprofessional and heartbreaking to witness.|Dining Disasters:|The dining experience was consistently subpar. Meal times were rigid, yet arriving even an hour into the two-hour window often meant many food options were already gone. Staff would start clearing stations and cleaning around guests a good 20 minutes before the end of service. Finding a clean table after the initial rush was nearly impossible. The restaurant itself was overcrowded, making it difficult to navigate with plates and a child, and there was a severe shortage of high chairs. To top it off, staff often pushed ahead of guests at serving stations. Food quality was also questionable – on one occasion, fish nuggets were served still frozen in the middle. The bar service was similarly lacking, frequently unable to prepare drinks listed on their own menu.|Language Barriers & Poor Service:|Despite being marketed as an international destination, this resort felt overwhelmingly French-only. Communication was a constant struggle. Many staff members, including those in key guest-facing roles, had extremely limited English, making simple requests like ordering coffee a challenge. Generally, service felt indifferent. One evening, we were abruptly asked to leave a bar area (supposedly open to all guests) because of an unannounced private event.|Run-Down Facilities & Room Issues:|The resort is showing significant wear and tear and lacks proper maintenance. The hallway to our room had a constant water leak from a utility room. Lifts had broken buttons and chipped panels. Our room was small, with dated, uncomfortable furniture, including the bed. The heating was ineffective upon arrival; despite calling immediately, it took three hours for a technician to show up. Basic amenities were missed – blankets were not provided, including crucially for our baby's cot. When someone was finally sent, they didn't speak English and needed to physically see the lack of blankets before understanding the issue.|Other Frustrations:|The parking situation for electric vehicles was poor, with only four chargers, some frequently broken, and often blocked by cars left parked indefinitely.|Overall:|Our stay at Club Med Opio was a catalogue of failures. From the rude welcome and misleading charges to the non-existent childcare access, poor dining, language barriers, and neglected facilities, it felt like we were misled and overcharged. This experience offered terrible value for money and left us feeling completely ripped off. We absolutely cannot recommend this resort, particularly for families or international visitors who speak...

Read moreWe stayed here for one week at the start of July. This was our first experience at a Club Med outside of the Caribbean, and it was the perfect start to a family vacation in Europe.
The main area with the large pool is the heart of the resort, and there are always events, good drinks, and snacks available there. It would be helpful if the outside pool bar had at least two bartenders because there was often a line up there while at the same time the bartenders at the inside bar were not so busy. The shallow pool is connected to the deep-water pool which makes it very convenient for families with small children. We did not have much problem finding chairs and only needed a small amount of patience in the mid-afternoon when it got busy. People are always coming and going. Just bring sunscreen and stay hydrated because it's sunny and hot.
The kids club is outstanding (as many reviewers say). The staff are so fun and kind - and definitely understand children. They went out of their way to make my daughter feel welcome and ease her anxiety. We are truly grateful for that. It does help to understand French since the shows are exclusively in French.
The adult area is tucked away behind the olive grove, and the lovely pool has no bar. It is also a silent area. This is a little different from other Zen areas at other resorts (eg. Punta Cana) and it attracts people who really want to unplug from the party for a few hours. The main restaurant is excellent and offeres spectacular views of the mountains. The staff are very helpful there too, and I would particularly like to thank Aayan and for helping me when I was there alone with my four-year old. If you want a table at the edge of the balcony, come to dinner early.
We ate every lunch meal at the Golf Restaurant at the edge of the golf course, and appreciated the kind staff there. Thank you Eugene and the team for ensuring that we enjoyed our experience to the fullest. We then spent every afternoon by the adult pool.
The entire service industry is working hard to catch up with the demand of this summer after Covid, and Jerry at Reception became our go-to person with questions and concerns. His experience and personality made him stand out and by the end of the week, he made us feel like VIP guests. We had a serious issue with our airport transfer and taxi, and he helped us at every step and offered us an appropriate compensation.
We were very lucky with the timing of our holiday (Friday to Friday) because on Thursday night they held fireworks and circulated fizzy drinks after the kids show. It really felt like a perfect send off.
We would definitely love to stay at Opio again, and would recommend it to any...
