What a place!. The minute you arrive, you know you've upgraded from your usual campsite. The entry to The site is clear and wide with plenty of parking which is always a worry when you're towing a large caravan.
The staff were Dutch and incredibly welcoming and informative about the site, bread ordering for the following morning and the surrounding area.
We were allocated a pitch but advised to come back if we didn't like it and we could choose another which was a nice touch.
The site is fairly large but laid out in well designed quarters with mature hedges providing privacy and making the site feel much more cosy.
There are a large number of safari tents and mobile homes but these are all of a modern wooden design so they blend nicely into the surroundings.
The other half of the site is given over to touring pitches and all of them were large. We paid an extra five euros for a larger pitch and we could easily fit our 7m long caravan, awning and two cars on it with space to spare!
The restaurant and bar area are very nice with a large covered terrace which is beautifully lit at night and there is a small but we'll stocked shop next to the reception. There is also a lovely pool and a great play area if you were coming as a family with children.
But the things that make this place special are the attention to detail and really knowing their guests. For example, due to its proximity to the Alp d'huez and the Col de croix de fer, it is well used by groups of cyclists and to cater for this, the site has created a bike maintenance and cleaning area which has two wall mounted clamps for holding your bike at chest level so that gears and cables can be easily adjusted along with a long hose for washing it.
It's only a small thing, but it shows that they really understand the type of guests they will have staying.
There is also a designated electric car charging point and a really good rubbish and recycling area.
The sanitary blocks are just incredible. They are fully enclosed and heated with each individual cubicle containing a large changing area so that you don't need to worry about your clothes getting wet, a separate sink and mirror and then a large shower. I've stayed in hotels with worse washrooms than this!
The whole site has a classy and well thought out feel to it. Each pitch has great views of the mountains and directly behind the site, there is a wonderful new tarmac cycle path which runs alongside the river into the town of Bourg d'oisans from where you can just visit the cafes and shops or then climb up the Alp d'huez if you've got the courage!
The site is also really well situated for a drive or cycle to the Col de croix de fer or to visit Vajaunay or Grenoble.
We really enjoyed our time here. It's the kind of place you could read a book by the pool with amazing mountain views of you can go on some epic hikes or bike rides and the fact that they accept the acsi card, makes it an incredible deal. Highly...
Read moreI spent a wonderful 7 day holiday at this campsite in August 2012 with my girlfriend and 9 year old son.
The location is gorgeous, tucked in the valley between mountains on either side and views along the valley floor. A large river runs beside the site which was great for running and there seemed to be some decent forest paths on the other side of the river, but we didn't have time to explore there.
The site is mainly Dutch with a few Brits most of whom were Eurocamping like us. The site is undoubtedly family-focused, with a lot of kids playing during the day, bbqs in the evening and then quiet after 10pm. A teenager/20 something looking for hedonism should go elsewhere.
Apart from the families there was also a community of committed cyclists who left the site around 8.30 not arriving back until 4ish, presumably making the most of the extraordinary mountain climbs nearby (including alp d'huez).
The swimming pools were lovely - clean and with wonderful views, although around 3pm there was singing and music for the kids and between 12 and 4 the area was quite busy. A morning swim however was a treat ....with the mist rising from the mountains and the shadows shortening across the valley.
If you simply stayed on the campsite all the time you'd definitely get bored but the range of activities nearby was a delight: surprisingly good hiking or gentle canoeing from nearby Bourg D'Oisans was straightforward...we also went lake swimming in les deux alps (ok but not as spectacular as it sounds, the lake is man made) and visited the glacier and ice caves at Meije (amazing views at around 3400m).
The mixture of an excursion each day and then returning to the tranquility of La Belledonne in the late afternoon worked well for us.
The accommodation was fine, we stayed in a purpose built cabin, it was comfortable, with a decent shower and a balcony. The tents also looked civilised (and would certainly have been cheaper).
Overall, I would highly recommended la Belledonne and camping in the Alps..less popular than the deep south but with a calmer, refreshing vibe. Temperatures were about 12-15 at night and 28 - 33...
Read moreI booked a deluxe caravan for one week, 6 berth with one double, two single and a pair of bunk beds. When we arrived our caravan was not ready even though i had told them months in advance and also a week before, that we would be there early. Anyway the young girl was very apologetic and we went shopping for supplies and when we returned , it was ready. It was in a nice quiet cul de sac, it was very clean and tidy and smelled fresh, the beds had just pillow cases on them and sheets, but we were not told to bring our own covers etc. Anyway the kitchen has most things except an oven, and there is a small table to eat at, also out side on the veranda, there are a pair of recliners which were clean and a 8 seater table with chairs, which we made good use of as we spent most of our time eating and sitting at it. The shower was clean and mold free as was the sink and the toilet was very clean and smelled fresh, must be the Alp air that everything smells fresh.||There is a small shop on site, which has the essentials and you can order yoru bread the day before, it also has a bar and restaurant and one day we took a rest from cycling and rested by the pool, which there are three of, one tiny one for babies who can get there feet wet, its not deep at all, then there is one for swimmers which i didn't go in, then ther eis a huge on which has a deep end of 1.80mtrs, all pools and the area around them was very clean, and the recliners are too.||As i said, we ate in the restaurant twice on the day off, once for snacks which were cooked perfect and tasted lovely with the added sauces, then we ate again at night and the food, was fine, well cooked and again tasty, but don't expect al a carte this is a camp site which is very busy in summer, but the food does fill your plate.||We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again as it has everything for families, even table tennis tables and a play area and is secure as the gate shuts at 11 and doesn't...
