Positives:
I stayed for 5 nights for the Pokémon Go Festival. The staff were lovely, always quick to smile back and respond to greetings. It didn’t feel unsafe at all to a young foreign girl who didn’t speak French. The staff barely spoke English but were very patient while I used a translator app.
Free microwave and kettle. I didn’t see any rats as complained about in other reviews, and only one cockroach on one day of my five nights. The staff often went around with cleaning spray wiping table surfaces, and mopping toilets regularly. Only one very hard working staff per day, but only after 9am, so when I checked out early at 7am I had to leave a note with my room card on the receptionist’s desk.
No USB ports, so make sure you bring a type E plug! Plug sockets right near each bed in bedroom 2, and the bathroom attached had two showers and two toilets so there was never a wait to use the facilities. Drains weren’t blocked. Free good quality WiFi. Plug sockets in the lounge/dining area as well. I didn’t see anyone sleeping in the lounge as complained about by other reviewers. The other residents were very polite and quiet. Abundance of large lockers in the rooms.
Ramps to the bedroom, so disabled friendly. There is a large toilet with shower behind reception that was always sparkling clean, and also has handles that made it a disabled friendly toilet. Extremely comfy bed and pillow.
The hostel is in a lovely quiet neighbourhood, but very close to grocery shops and restaurants. High turnover of people staying, and I never heard any complaints from any of them about thieves or anything else. Extremely multicultural guests, no sign of discrimination. Extremely multicultural neighbourhood as well.
Overall I would definitely recommend this place to stay as it felt safe and the staff are lovely, and it’s perfect if you are poor and all you really want is a roof, a bed, and a shower, and you don’t care about frills.
Negatives:
I booked female only, but was put in a mixed dorm. However, the receptionist apologised profusely and said I could check back the next day to see if there was any space in the ladies dorm, but I didn’t because I didn’t feel unsafe in the mixed dorm.
Make sure you bring your own soap - none anywhere for the bathroom sinks or for washing up, and hit and miss on whether a spoon or fork would be available. I bought disposable cutlery. However, really pleased that there were free bowls and plates available to use.
No fans, so really warm and stuffy. No radiators either, so in winter it will probably be cold. The three tiered bunk bed squeaked so badly at the slightest movement, even when breathing, however the two tiered bunk beds were fine.
Despite the cleaning done by the very busy receptionist/jack-of-all-trades, the tables and floors and bathrooms got really dirty very quickly, it was rare to see anything clean. And yes, there was mould in the showers, and the toilets did stink, but everything worked so it wasn’t an inconvenience.
The lockers didn’t have locks, you have to bring your own padlock, which would be fine, however you have to make sure you bring a padlock with a very thick bar as if it is less than 6 millimetres thick then the lockers can still be twisted open. I unfortunately kept coming back at the end of the day to find that the handle had been twisted severely and had gotten jammed as people have tried to open my locker, but thankfully because my padlock bar was very thick they weren’t successful in turning it all the way and...
Read moreIf there’s a lower rating I would give to Trendyhostel!!! I booked my reservation on the website over a week before my trip and made payment for three nights, I categorically chose the female dom for my preference. Getting to the hostel, tired and exhausted due to my long hour trip, The reception asked for confirmation of my payment which I showed to him, He confirmed it and asked that I give him few minutes to sort it… It took him over 30 minutes (whilst I kept asking if everything was fine) to tell me my reservation has issues and he’s working on it (sounds like it would get sorted right!) I waited patiently and it took another 30 minutes to inform me that it couldn’t get sorted and their options for me was Sleep in a mixed room of 10 male (I’m female) or send a mailto:trendyhostelivry@gmail.com for my refund and that’s going to take three working days! I was devastated and helpless! I asked the receptionist that I speak to his manager, He replied that his manger said He can’t speak, He could only receive mails(This is who I could clearly hear him speak over the phone) I began crying and asked that I got a refund of my money, The receptionist began shouting at me that He couldn’t do nothing as his superiors were in charge not him… I called the Police and they came over helped me in getting a new hotel- I haven’t got a single response to my complaint mail and my refund! All of this took me five hours to sort out leaving me draining and regretting my holiday trip to France! VERY TERRIBLE...
Read moreHands down the worst hostel experience I've ever had. My flight was late which meant I would arrive about ten minutes after the allotted check in time. The hostel's phone numbers wouldn't work and I received no response from emails, so they were impossible to contact about my situation. I was relieved to see the receptionist was there, but he offered no help or sympathy and told me to come back tomorrow. Upon returning the next day, I discovered that at around 3am the hostel had sent an email cancelling my entire stay which was fully paid in advance, with no refunds possible and that I would have to pay the full price again to renew my reservation. I imagine this is probably why the business is so strict about their check-in time.
Other than the horrible customer service and practice, the pictures of the hostel online are quite misleading. Most of the furniture advertised is not there anymore and the common room is extremely limited and uncomfortable. During the two hours I was there the Wi-Fi did not work for a single minute, and their "kitchen" is nothing more than a microwave without other amenities.
The day-time staff in general was much friendlier, but there is only so much they could do.
While this place is cheap, there are similarly priced accomodations in much better locations that I would highly suggest over...
