We were delighted with our stay at the Chateau. After travelling down the wooded lane we arrived at the gorgeous old world 'cours' and were welcomed by the Viscount and his delightful niece.||||We were two couples. My husband and I had the red suite which included an large salon with sofas and tables. There were family portraits on the walls and views over the gardens. Our bedroom boasted a beautiful red satin canopy and lovely antique furniture. The bathroom was quaint with lovely panelling. There are family photographs everywhere and it is is clear that the owners are very happy in their surroundings. ||||Our friends had the Viscount's old bedroom with a private bathroom just down the corridor. The bathroom was so big is even had a daybed in it!||||We had hoped to get a taxi into St Brieuc for dinner but apparently the village does not have a taxi service and they would have to come out from St Brieuc at a hefty price. Marie Josephine, the Viscount's niece offered to make us a light supper in the garden which we gratefully accepted. The meal and wines were delicious and we had a long chat with the Viscount and Viscountess.||||The breakfast was at a huge table in the family dining room and, again, everything was superb.||||The house is a family home and as such is quirky. Those wanting the standard of a 5* hotel ought to go to a hotel instead of the chateau. We, however, enjoyed it all the more as it is 'natural' and has evolved over many centuries. The house is full of the family's antiques and charm. We would not wish it any other way. Everything you could wish for was provided, plenty of hot water, tea/coffee, WIFI, television, plenty of space to puts things. We think they have 'got it' just right for those who appreciate historic buildings. The Viscount is a keen hunter and there is evidence everywhere, even on the dining area sofa where a gorgeous red fox sleeps the eternal sleep!||||The little dog Coquin was sweet and very friendly and the owners do welcome guest's dogs. The gardens are extensive and a delight to wander through. There are garden tables and chairs everywhere on the property so one can hide away with a book and a cold drink at any time.||||Louis and Joelle Du Fou de Kerdaniel are a delightful couple and very welcoming to their guests. I think they take great pleasure in sharing their beautiful home with others.||||We will return as soon...
Read moreWe have just returned from a 6 night stay at the Chateau de Bonabry. It was charming in every sense of the word. We stayed in a lovely suite that comprised a very large lounge area with small dining table, sofas and tv, a very large bedroom and a decent sized en suite.||We were welcomed by the Vicomte and his wife. Initially we wondered if our limited French and their limited English would be an issue but definitely not. It made the holiday. After telling them our dog was 30 not 13 (much to everyone's amusement, apart from our dog's) and requesting a bird instead of an egg for breakfast we got by just fine.||It felt more like going to stay in someone's home than a hotel, a home that is clearly well loved. There are numerous family photographs dotted around the guest rooms and the vicomte and his wife obviously enjoy working in their lovely rambling gardens full of beautiful roses. At the end of the day I would often sit with a book and they would regularly be pottering about, with their dog Cochin never far away. Our dog was always made very welcome.||In an age of fast paced travel it was a welcome change to drop down a gear and enjoy a beautiful setting and some old world charm. That said the wifi connection was excellent and there was no shortage of hot water.||Many guests seemed to stay for one or two nights while we were there travelling to or from somewhere else. We found Hillion to be a perfect base for visiting the surrounding towns. There are lots of great local walks and some lovely restaurants only a short drive away.||Chateau de Bonabry was everything we...
Read moreWow! What a stunning place to stay overnight. It was much less a hotel than an invitation to the home of Vicomte Louis du Fou de Kerdaniel and his wife, the Vicomtesse Joëlle. As we arrived, we were welcomed by the Vicomte himself and given a brief guided tour of the property, including the beautiful gardens before being shown our rooms.||Our living room was almost the size of a tennis court with a fabulous original fireplace and which was furnished with mainly period furniture; the bedroom was equally large proportions adorned with family portraits and containing two full-tester double beds that were wonderfully comfortable.||The Château does not provide evening meals, but there are very good recommendations to be had both in the local town of Hillion and further afield. Breakfast, however, was excellent with fresh bread and croissants and home-made pancakes, served with clearly home-made preserves.||This really is a step back in time to the days when civilised society truly existed and although the Château is equipped with satellite television and Wi-Fi, the air of old world charm is the biggest feature of this wonderful hostelry.||This was a genuine "find" and my wife and I (and our son) are eagerly awaiting the next time that we can visit this Château and we sincerely regret that we were only staying...
