I want to write a review before I leave because this place was such a special place for me in particular, and such an adventure. It took us 12 hours to get here door to door. We drove first to Gatwick at 4.30am and flew to Geneva and I think we landed in Geneva about 9am your time. We could have got a taxi from there, but we think the journey is an important part of the whole thing, so then we got a train to Anemasse and then Thonon les Bains but got stuck on the way due to a signal failure, so got stuck in a station for two hours on our way up, but then got a bus from Thonon Les Bains to Chapelle-D’Abondance. Then, the next day we hiked up to Col de Vernaz and down to Lac de Avourin. By that point we were completely exhausted! We work in hospitality and own a restaurant in Brighton so we were even tired from the weekend before we arrived. I must say that this hotel is amazing. You can see the history and the passion everywhere you look. And having kept the business in the family for 130 years is an incredible achievement. We are gradually acclimatising ourselves to this amazing place, but fear that the time here is too short. Everyone was so lovely, even though my French is not good. I did try to study before I came and did try. But for me it was an incredible place. I felt like I had landed in a different world, but one that I will never forget. Thank you so much for your kindness and an incredible...
Read moreOur welcome was efficient, if rather basic - "Hello, here's your keys, do you want breakfast?" - first impressions are SO important after all. But I was ignored by the 4 staff there when I went back later to ask where the Spa was. 2 just looked at me and carried on with what they were doing, one answered a phone and, just as I thought the final lady was coming to help me, a staff member walked out of the bar towards reception and she turned away to speak to him instead. That aside, we had a fantastic stay. And, just so you don't get disheartened, we found the staff in the bar/restaurant amazingly efficient and friendly, the main restaurant staff friendly, helpful and kind and our bedroom/bathroom was immaculately clean, so applause to the cleaning staff, too.||||Room was a family one at the front of the hotel on the first floor - No 11. We liked it. It wasn't over the top, but the the beds were comfortable, there was plenty of cupboard/wardrobe space, bath robes were provided and the toiletries in the bathroom were worth using. You open the door and walk into bunk beds, so guess it is aimed at families.||||The swimming pool,, hot tubs and Spa are excellent, the museum is an interesting amenity but you will go back for the food, service and (most of) the staff. We went to celebrate my birthday and I hope we will go back again, just...
Read more-after a rainy night it was not possible to get to the car on the parking area- or even to remove the car from there. The hotel staff does not care about the icy conditions, it seems like they did not clear snow for the whole season…with rain on top it is like an ice skating area. As we asked how to solve this, if they can please remove the ice a bit that we can remove the car from there, they smiled and said we need to wait for the sun. |We are talking about 4 cm of pure ice…|Then they need to tell us that they do not care, so we haven’t had parked there.|- many guests, even us, fell because of the ice! Luck that nobody got hurt!|-the showers at the spa area do not work or only for short seconds, people stay sweaty after sauna and go swimming like that, urgh.|-the ventilation at the bathroom does not work||-the room was nice and clean.|-most of the...
