After dithering for ages about where to stay in Berlin I gambled and opted to stay in an upmarket suburb towards Wansee & Potsdam rather than the city centre. The locale is very attractive, quiet and residential. I like architecture and just walking around the nearby streets admiring the beautiful mix of old and more modern styles was a joy.
Location wise you have access to S-Bahn at Mexicoplatz = 5 minute walk & U-Bahn at Krumme Lanke = 10 - 15. You can be city centre within 30 minutes or so.
The hotel is a family run affair and would suit those who prefer a quiet place to lay their heads. Accommodation is of a very good standard. The big plus here is that you are made to feel a person rather than another tourist and the staff all go out of their way to chat and give advice. You are unlikely to find this in the majority of city centre establishments. As someone who speaks German like a 3 year old I was impressed by the standard of English spoken by everyone.
If you like a drink before turning in I would recommend Banhof Klause underneath the S-Bahn station. The most convenient restaurant is across Mexicoplatz, La Gondola, nice food and you can sit and quaff a few after your meal at your leisure. For more choice I would recommend eating somewhere on your way back from a day out. Many pubs do food at reasonable prices away from the main drags and you will generally find nice places to eat on or around main platz's.
I liked the other guests in the hotel, who were mainly German. They were very polite and friendly and were happy to chat at breakfast time when you tend to see the other guests. Almost all spoke good enough English to hold conversations and were gracious enough to appreciate my miserable attempts to recollect my schoolboy German from 45 years previously. At a time when the UK is seeking divorce from Europe it was rather reassuring to get on so well with such...
Read moreMy husband and I have been travelling to Berlin for years and were tired of the chain hotels.||When we found this hotel we were very pleased. It is run by delightful people who cant do enough for you. They all speak excellent English but allow me to practise my German as well.|| We always stay in our favourite room which is spacious and well equipped. However we have "stuck our heads around" other rooms when the maids have been cleaning them and they all look fine as well. They change the towels regularly and provide cosmetics.I once forgot my toothbrush and a brand new one a mini tube of toothpaste was supplied free.|| We visit in the winter and the house is kept as warm as toast. The staff are always happy to make you coffees (again, free of change) || The breakfast is good - always something a little bit different from the day before, which is good for us as we stay a week at a time.If you sit in the panorama windows of this room you can often spot red squirrels going about their business.|| It is really near beautiful lakes which are lovely to walk around. If you go in the summer you can swim in them.|| The neighbourhood is quite upmarket suburban. The village of Mexicoplatz has some shops but bigger shops are about a 10 minute walk away. The U Bahn runs directly into Berlin - as it is near the end of the line you are always guaranteed a seat! || One of my favourite restaurants in the world The Gondala Due is a 2 minute walk from the hotel.Excellent food and wonderful service (see my post) The hotel staff are happy to ring the restaurant up and make bookings for you.In fact they will ring up any restaurant/theatre/taxi etc and make bookings - no charge again - its all just part of the service. || What more can I say about this hotel? It's...
Read morethis is my second time here and both times have been great. Rooms comfortable, quiet and breakfasts are wonderful-croissants, dark German bread, cappuccino, cheeses, fruit, yogurt, couldn’t ask for more. I really appreciate all that they do for you, from the u- bahn tickets, to ordering taxis, chatting in English and even when i’d Forgotten they don’t start breakfast until 8am at the weekend the lady went out of her way to get us ready for our early start and conference (even though we had made her a bit flustered) The staff are so friendly and do all they can to make you feel welcome. On our last and very early morning they had even set up a few breakfast goodies before our early flight departure. Couldn’t recommend more. Yes, it is a little further from the centre of Berlin but it an authentic, well run establishment and I hope to be back next...
