If you are looking for a quiet family holiday by the Moselle, this site is not for you!
The rules state quiet time 10pm to 7am so on day 4 of our 9 day trip when at least 10 guys turned on the pitch beside us with five big steel beer barrels, pump, gas and tap plus a huge firepit and large speeker, we were rather concerned! Over the next two days noise and disturbance escalated. Heavy metal music blaring out and the sort of noise you'd expect from 10 guys drinking beer all day and night. They even invaded our pitch on numerous occasions using it as a thoroughfare, nocking over stuff and while they played a weird skittle type game involving stick throwing. There is a caravan with a sign saying night watchman but I never saw them despite frequent attempts. I eventually lost it with them at 3am on the second night and they quietend down after that. Weirdly none of the other folk (mostly German and Dutch) did anything. Wife and I had already decided we'd had enough and would exit the site the next morning. On going to the office they knew exactly who and what I was ranting on about due to other complaints and promtly told the group they had to leave. Too little too late for us.
Bottom line as relayed to me by the camp staff is the local government who own the site, are not investing in it, have withdrawn the night watch and are allowing large groups like the the one described to do as they please. Ruinous for us and for them in the end.
There are pros: When we stayed it was blisteringly hot so the showers having a manual temperature control was very welcome. The site is close to Cochem and some great cycling and there is an Aldi 5 minutes...
Read moreBooked for 3 nights but immediately wanted to escape. Crammed in to the point of downright dangerous with electric cables doubled up and running everywhere (if one van goes up in flames they'll all go up). The site is dirty (surprisingly clean showers and toilets however all down to the hardworking ladies) littered, cramped and has two pervading smells. Cigarettes and sewerage. Our 'pitch' had a lovely view of a bus and coach stop where the drivers take regular piss breaks in the bushes less than 3 metres away. There was a questionable fly infested bag hanging from the tree at the pitch and the constant smell made us quite ill. The on site restaurant has the same pervasive stench but coupled with the aroma of deep fat frying. Cochem itself is advertised as a beautiful medieval town on the Mosel. It's a dive. The souvenir shops are pure tack, the restaurants questionable quality, homeless and drug users abound. The site is a 20 minute walk through weeds and heavily littered streets. We left early (non refundable). Could not wait to get out of this expensive hellhole and by far THE worst campsite I have ever encountered. Stay away, there are much cheaper, prettier and spacious...
Read moreA reasonable campsite, close to the centre of Cochem. Downsides are that there is not much flat land available on the banks of the Mosel, so pitches are quite crammed in, not very level and fairly small; we visited during the wine festival and it was more like a car park than a holiday location at first! Thankfully it emptied soon after, and was much more pleasant. Good clean facilities, however there are only two wash-blocks for the whole site, and unfortunately the sewers of Cochem don't seem to be able to meet the increased demand during the busy period, so try not to camp too close, and take note of the wind direction! The nearby supermarkets and bakery are useful, and you can get a discount card for the pool next door. We travelled along the Mosel and passed nicer looking campsites, but Cochem is the only place for miles with any amenities, so while this one isn't perfect it's is a good choice if you want to visit Cochem, and stay in a convenient location, plus...
