First, the photo on this page is NOT the Stratos Hotel in Astakos. They have a Facebook page, look up Stratos Hotel Astakos, which shows the correct place.||||This is a grand old hotel, with amazing art deco and nouveau wood interior, amazing chandeliers, huge hallways and so on. It was not expensive, but there were few people staying in it. Rooms open on to huge balconeys with amazing views of the bay. Even the driveway has a feel of past grandeur, with palm trees, hedges, etc. ||||Unfortunately the place is a bit run down. They keep the lights off, no doubt because they are struggling to make enough to stay afloat. The grand furnishings in the foyers are dusty. The rooms have not been updated since at least the 1950s, perhaps earlier. Dining room/ballroom is defunct, although if you ask you can get a drink. You just wish the place was thriving as it is such a glorious property, sadly empty and unused. It's not posh, but it once was, now it's a bit run down. ||||On the other hand, the linens were clean, the ancient fixtures worked. The innkeeper, who appears to work 24/7, was extremely friendly and helpful - he found phone cards, drinks, beer, was up late, available by buzzer all night, and up early watering the plants and washing the walkways. I can't say enough about how eager and helpful he was. ||||Restaurants in town were very decent, the beach right across the street is wonderful. If only more people would use this place so its inherent beauty...
Read moreWe stayed for 3 days in room number 308 and we LOVED it. Only payed 50 euros per night incl. breakfast. The room was very clean and had a good size, nice furniture and a modern bathroom with tub. From the balcony there was the most fantastic view of the beautiful bay. I could sit there all day! We watched the sunrise in the morning, the pink light around sunset and the moonlight on the sea at night. So wonderful. We stayed on the third floor which is the topfloor and the balcony up there is rather narrow but space enough for two persons to sit and enjoy the view. The rooms on the first and second floor have very large balconies. There is a small beach right in front of the hotel and two more small beaches if you walk to the right when you come out from the hotel. Walk a little further and you will find a larger beach after the small monestary. If you walk to the left when you come out from the hotel you will find several restaurants and cafés and the small port of Astakós from where you can take the ferry to Cefalonia and Ithaca. Yes, the hotel is a little dated and the breakfast is simple but the staff is nice and helpful and where else can you get a location and view like that at that price?! We really enjoyed our stay and would love...
Read moreThe best asset of the hotel is its location, right in front of the sea. It's also next to the area where the restaurants are. This on one have was handy, on the other hand it was a problem because there was noise during the night. What is also really nice is the breakfast area. Now, the hotel and the rooms are quite old-fashioned and worn out, it's evident that it requires an important renovation. The breakfast was very basic and the refill process of things that were running out was very slow. You always had to request the staff to do so. All in all, I would not...
