My wife, 11 and 13 yea-olds, I really enjoyed our December 2021 visit to Posada del Cerro. From my first interactions with him on WhatsApp, Ricard Busquets, the manager of del Cerro was organized, gracious, and helpful. We opted for the three-bed apartment in the lodge, so we could prepare lunches and breakfasts for ourselves. Sitting on the apartment’s deck at night, listening to the (loud) insect sounds of the forest was wonderful. The apartment was basically furnished and, while you wouldn’t want to cook up a seven-course dinner, the apartment’s kitchen was sufficient; we found going up to the main kitchen/dining area 25 meters away to get another plate (or a bit of sugar) was super easy. The kitchen staff will provide jugs of drinking water for your use upon request. Dinners at del Cerro were limited to 2-3 choices (always a vegetarian option) and given the limited number of tables/seats, you needed to make a reservation for dinner by late afternoon. Despite this, dinners at del Cerro’s restaurant were surprisingly tasty and the proportions larger than expected. As was our experience with other lodging in Guatemala, COVID protocols were integrated into all operations in terms of cleaning & spacing of tables. Ricard and his staff always wore masks; guests wore them as well, though this is a social expectation, not a demand. Right across the road from the hotel is a grassy area from which we all swam in the (very-warm) lake. Finally, a stay at del Cerro is money well spent. All told, we really enjoyed our six nights at...
Read morePosada del Cerro is a rare gem. It's tucked away discretely on a bluff above glittering Lake Peten Itza in El Remate, Guatemala. Howler monkeys haunt the treetops and roar out their challenges, raucous parrots wing overhead, lizards sun themselves in the morning. They call themselves a Hostal but it's a little nicer than that. The staff is excellent and friendly and ready to help with any needs, questions, or to make arrangements for travel etc.. Also, a number of the staff have excellent English. There is a nice dining/lounge area and they serve meals, snacks, and beverages from early morning to late night. Some activities we enjoyed while staying here were the hiking in Cerro Cahui ( immediately adjacent to the Posada), swimming in Lake Penten Itza (at the foot of the bluff and crystal clear), seeing the sights in Flores at the other end of the (very large) lake, horse trekking in the nearby countryside, and visiting nearby Maya archaeological sites. One caution, it's a steep climb up from the road to reach the lodgings, you need to be...
Read moreThis location was the highlight of our trip to Guatemala! The location is fantastic as it is right near the town of El Remate and lake Petén Itzá so there is plenty of food and places to relax when needed. The food and rooms at the hotel are great as well. You are just a short shuttle ride from Tikal without having to deal with many crowds. ||The best part of the hotel is the abundant nature in the area. It is right next to biotopo cerro cahui which is a sanctuary for many bird, mammal and reptile species. We saw many amazing species of wildlife right in the hotel grounds including blue-crowned motmot, howler monkey, gartered trogon, and helmeted iguanas. While we were there, one of the hosts named Santos was extremely helpful in pointing out lots of these animals and where to find him. He was an excellent host and was extremely knowledgable on all the local wildlife and plants. If you are looking for a nice and relaxing spot near Tikal to enjoy lots of wildlife I would highly...
