One thing you are going to need if you visit rio Dulce and the Castilllo de San Felipe in Izabal is quiet in your room. This hotel is in the town of San Felipe just a block away from the Castillo de San Felipe. The hotel needs more signage around town to make it easier to find. The hotel has access to the Lake and their gardens are luscious and plenty of singing birds will greet you. It is also hot in town and the air conditioned rooms will be welcome enough for a weary traveller. They have a pool, restaurant, WIFI and free parking in a locked facility in the hotel. Their WIFI is spotty at best ( the staff are not very knowledgeable in this regard and can't manage the technology to keep the signal on for more than a few hours at the time). Their restaurant is superb and the staff are very attentive. The rooms are rustic inside but clean. We had a room for four with three beds 1 matrimonial and two full beds. The room had a private bathroom and hot water, the TV is an old tube color TV from Samsung with remote, all for the equivalent of $50.00 dollars. Not a bad deal when others don't have such nice accommodations . |If you are on a budget and need a quiet comfortable place to sleep you might want o give this...
Read moreThis hotel is in an excellent location with a fantastic view of the water and many amenties, all at a reasonable price. The simple but comfortable room had A/C, private bath with a hot shower, cable TV, two beds, toiletries (soap, shampoo) and a ceiling fan. The room was cleaned daily. The grounds are tip top with hammocks for hanging out and small animals like rabbits and agoutis roaming around. The pool and restaurant area is very nice. The restaurant has an extensive menu, good prices and convenient hours. The food and cocktails were tasty and the service was excellent. This hotel has a private dock for swimming, which also means that you can get a boat taxi in Rio Dulce under the bridge after getting off the bus at the Litegua station. In fact, the public boat to Livingston picked us up and dropped us off at the hotel's dock with no extra charge. I couldn't find this hotel on any travel site so I had to reserve via WhatsApp. After answering all my questions, they sent me a link to a personalized payment page so I could pay with a credit card. It was somewhat cumbersome but I didn't have any issues. I'd definitely...
Read moreHighly recommend Viñas del Lago as the variety of different style room or cabana options are extensive and the resort is beautiful. For the owners to call this a hotel is an understatement. This is the resort to stay at, right on Lago de Izabal and just a short 10 minute walk to Castillo de San Felipe de Lara, a perfectly restored Spanish colonial fort that is a must see. We spent at least an hour talking to the castillo curator about the history of the area! The resort is a botanical paradise and surround the cabins with picturesque flowers and butterflies. I had a difficult time keeping myself from spending too many hours observing and photographing them. The bathrooms and rooms are extremely clean and we were told if there are any issues they will make make right immediately. We did not observe any issues whatsoever. The pool and restaurant is excellent as is the management, owners and staff who made us feel like we...
