One of the most beautiful experiences. There's a lot of things to do. Once you pay to go inside, you can visit the castle and after finishing the tour, you can stay and rent a jet ski, take a boat ride (pay extra) swim in the river, cook a bbq or eat at a restaurant and swim at the restaurant pool while your food is prepared and served. Going back to the boat tours and jet ski rental, always bargain and offer at least Q150.00 to Q100.00 less than what they are asking. Remember that they are also competing for your business and if one doesn't take what you want to pay, someone else may be willing to do it for less. Again, the place is beautiful. Next time I visit, I'll plan for a 2 day trip at this place. There are also many other things you can do in the surrounding areas like visiting amatique Bay about an hour and a half up north, or the calm beautiful beaches of the Atlantic ocean. You can also visit the garífuna town close by and enjoy a completely different cuisine. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. One last thing, we stayed at the Banana Palms hotel and enjoyed our stay there. Very good for the price. Average food, good service and beautiful views...

Absolutely worth the visit! The Castillo de San Felipe de Lara is a beautiful and historic site right on the edge of Río Dulce and Lake Izabal. The 1650s Spanish fort is in excellent condition—you can walk through its chambers, climb the towers, and enjoy stunning views of the water.

The surrounding park is incredibly well-maintained. There’s a clean, calm swimming area that’s great for cooling off, and the grounds are spotless thanks to regular cleaning. There are plenty of benches and shaded areas to relax, and local vendors selling snacks, drinks, and handmade items give it a friendly, local vibe without being pushy.

Parking is just 20 quetzales. Entrance is 25 quetzales for Guatemalan nationals and 75 for foreigners—totally fair considering how much there is to enjoy. It’s a perfect mix of history, nature, and local culture. Highly recommend stopping here if you’re anywhere...

The Castillo de San Felipe is located within a national park, everyone must pay a fee of Q25 for citizens and Q75 for foreigners. It is open from 8:00 through 17:00 hours. There is no parking lot in the park so you'll have to use one of the parkings around, besides you'll have to walk approximately 5 minutes from the entrance to arrive to the castle. The restrooms are really far from the the picnic area and the castle, besides those restrooms do not have water service installed, you need to go outside and grab the water to flush the restroom you used! Certainly it is not a handicap friendly place. Also you'll find a cemetery along the way to get...

The castle is very nice, it served as an old fort that was built by the Spanish to protect from pirate raids. The views are really nice and the fort is kept in very good condition. However, in less then 1 hour you can see everything. Also, they charge 75Q from tourists (3 times the price the locals pay) which is very high for such short activity. If you wanna go there consider taking a boat from Rio dulce, it cost us 50Q per person and he waited for us an hour to complete the tour. Honestly a nice experience tho I Don't think it worth the very high price. Spend your time on a jet ski instead.
