If you're looking for luxury, this place is not for you. If you're looking for a locally owned place to stay tucked in the jungle and away from people, this is it.
I stayed in the dorms for two days and enjoyed falling asleep and waking up to the sounds of the jungle. Given the location and type of place it is, there will likely be bugs. Not roaches, or massive spiders, but I had one stick bug make it's way inside and a couple of moths so nothing crazy and a part of the experience.
Service was absolutely wonderful. The owner answered many of my questions about local agriculture, and took the time to share some knowledge about semuc champey with me as I chose not to pay for a tour. There is no kitchen, but the food at the restaurant is very very good and very reasonably priced.
The location is great if you aren't planning to do a ton of extra activities around lanquin, but they do offer a shuttle service to lanquin every morning for 25q so I wouldn't let that deter you too much. I walked about 3 km to semuc champey and got a tuk tuk back for 15q since I got super sunburned. It's on the road to get where you need to go, but there's nothing else around. A wonderful place to sit back and relax after semuc champey or a lot of travel.

Read moreLoved the location a nice walk to Semuc Champey (but the walk back is uphill, so I wish took a pickup back). The owner Manuel is great, really helpful and knowledgeable. He pointed out all the types of plants, (coffee, cacao, and spices) as he drove us from the shuttle dropoff spot to the hostel in his pickup. Ask him about the cave at the hostel.
The other staff are also great. Whenever anyone ordered food or a shuttle, the guys working knew everyone's names without asking and never mixed up the tabs.
The mattress in the 8 bed dorm was nice, didn't feel any springs. The showers are cold, so take it when you're extra sweaty. The buildings are basic and have metal roofs, which was the first time stayed in a place with that. It gets hot in the middle of the day, so go out and enjoy the nature instead!
The power went out my last day during the day, but by dinnertime they got a generator working. Food is good portions and less pricey than l expected after being in El Paredon a...
