Guanaja island stole our hearts!!
We were fortunate enough to stay at Guanaja Backpackers Hostel for a month. This is the definition of ‘off the beaten track’ and adventure for backpackers. If you like rustic (a few creepy crawlers) animals and the ocean - you will love GB! The hostel is simple but has everything you need, it offers dorms and a private sea cabin. Guanaja is certainly the less touristy bay island and we felt privileged to have experienced it like this- a slice of authentic Guanajan flavour! Aaron the hostel owner was our friend, teacher and guide. Everyday was different, Caye excursions, hiking, snorkelling, diving, remote village tours, ‘pub’ crawls to name a few. You can do activities or simple sit in a hammock and loose yourself in the scenery. The animals of GB brought us joy and adventure everyday, Coppa, Koah, Luna, Captain Max (dogs), Catington (cat), rabbits and chickens made for great entertainment.
A short 30 minute flight from La Ceiba is all it takes to get the extra worthwhile backpacker adventure of a lifetime. There is always flowing beer, storytellers and good music at GB! This island is a far throw from the throngs of tourists on Utila and Roatan.
We made memories of a...
Read moreAaron's place is awesome. It provides all the comfort you need and the cabins feature a big terrasse with a stunning view on the lagoon where you can spend hours chilling out. Same view from the kitchen... cooking has never been so cool :) We came here for 1 week but this place is so nice that we decided to stay 2 extra weeks. It's pretty remote and you'll feel like you're alone in the world. Aaron, Marvin, Gia, Lenny and all the people we met there were super friendly and always here for a chat. On top of that, the property has its own beautiful beach and they provide kayaks to reach the numerous breath taking snorkling spots by your own. We came here for working and kitesurfing and in both cases we've been fulfilled: the internet connection is great and the property is located a few minutes walk from the 2 only beaches where you can launch a kite. The kitesurf itself is just incredible on the lagoon. In short, you got me, this place is an...
Read moreI visited Guanaja Backpackers Hostel for a week in July of 2018 during the Conch Festival. Aaron was the consummate host, helping to fill my days with hikes around the island, shopping trips in town, snorkling, hanging with locals and trips around the island for the festival, while giving me all the space I needed for relaxation time, too. I busted my ankle at the end of my trip and he took great care of me while I recuperated, too! Aaron also has two great dogs, a few cats and some productive chickens (fresh eggs!) to make your trip more fun for animal lovers. There's also a gorgeous garden to enjoy; come ready to eat your weight in fresh coconut. ||||Be prepared to truly unplug while you're here; at least while I was there, power was out intermittently and wifi, while available at the hostel, was unreliable, so plan accordingly. Life on Guanaja is slow-paced, so bring a good book, a snorkel mask and a great attitude. I'll...
