This place really grew on me. I gave five stars for what this place offers, not suggesting it's a five- star hotel. It's essentially a motel, in a quiet backwater fishing village. Don't expect an haute-cuisine breakfast or a range of amenities. I was only sent there because my fight was cancelled and the airtime arranged it. At first I wondered what on earth I would do. Turns out, it's a little gem.
From the artwork painted by the owner in the dining room, to the little yamaha organ in the sitting room, there are lots of little touches that differentiate this place from the corporate and plastic offerings of most hotels- you can tell it's somewhere the owner cares about. The rooms are clean and tidy, if rather simple. The showers are hot and the breakfast is balanced and more than sufficient.
The owner, Gudmundur Franz Jónasson, is helpful, interesting and knowledgeable. He designed and built the place 22 years ago. If he has time, he might play a game of chess with you or tell you a story about his time in London, or the folks that have come through the otherwise unglamorous place, from international footballers...
Read moreProbably the worst "hotel" in which I have ever been, and I have travelled in many different countries and conditions. When entering, our "hello" was greeted by a "are you here to pay ?" wellcome. But that was only the beginning. Previous guests left open food in the fridge, that was not cleaned. The small kitchen was untidy, beds were undone, and also a previously used towel was left in the bath. When my wife showed up for complaining the receptionist physically pushed her out of the reception and start screaming since another upcoming guest was evaluating if taking a room or not hearing our complaints. Very tempted to call the police when that happened, but not knowing what could happen then we let it go. Floor of the bathroom has the wrong incline, so when taking a shower the bathroom becomes a pool. The poorest breakfast I saw in Iceland. And what made me mad overall is that there were much much better hotel and guesthouses in Reykjavik available at the...
Read moreWish I could give a higher rating as this was the most beautiful country I'd been to, and the few staff were as pleasant as all the other Icelanders I'd met. But the hotel itself was not as advertised at all. I came as part of a school excursion from the UK, I was under the impression that the rooms consisted of 1 bathroom for every 2 people. However, I shared 1 between 6, and the rooms changed to 3 per actual room which I believe I'm to blame on my school but originally it was 2. And I have low standards I really do, and that's why I eat the food, but it was not pleasant in all honesty. But the rooms were the worst part, there was one section that shared 2 bathrooms between 10-12 children I believe? And this toilet got clogged with human waste on the first night so I'm extremely glad I wasn't part of this section! All I can say is I'd have to recommend any other hotel if you're looking for real comfort but you'll manage...
