I rarely write a 1 star review out of respect for hard working people and business owners whose shoes I have not walked in. But BNR Chanakya really went to lengths to get this kind of reaction out of me.
We had booked our stay from 26th March - 28th March. It was during Holi in Ranchi. Already, there was a shortage of cabs that day so it took us sometime to get to the hotel. No biggie. We got there and got a first hand impression of how short staffed the entire hotel was. Again, we made peace with it. Staff was courteous and helped with all requests.
Our problems started with the food. My parents and sister had Chinese food at their restaurant. I had breakfast buffet and based on my first hand experience, I should have picked on some of the hygiene related red flags - some of the food items such as fruits and curd were kept uncovered. It does not matter that it’s an A/C indoor restaurant. Things go bad easily and it’s best to keep such items covered and cool. We all 4 have picked up extremely bad stomach conditions as a result. And the effect has been extremely severe on my elderly parents. This short vacation is now being followed up by visits to the hospital.
Up next- the construction work ongoing in the hotel premises. Day 1 was no problem as the crew was away for Holi. Day 2 was also ok but when we returned in the night, my parents had to endure the noises of woodwork late evening. And that sucks if you have had a long tiring day outdoors. My elderly mother made multiple requests to stop the construction and finally had to walk all the way to reception to request the manager to do something. They tried to get rid of her by saying that “it’s almost 6:00 pm anyways, so let’s see”. Wow. What guest treatment training these people have received is beyond my comprehension.
My parents had no choice but to keep bearing that noise till the crew left. Their bad health condition was further exacerbated as they couldn’t get appropriate rest.
Day 3 - checkout day. Constant hammering upstairs snatched any iota of rest that they could have got in the morning before checkout. Repeated requests to stop the work and let the guests actually feel like a guest were met with typical - “we are working on it”. My sister had to finally walk up to the reception and request the manager on duty to do something. They tried to shrug her off by sending a bell boy who obviously had no authority in the situation. She had to fight for the senior manager to take notice, who tried to offer us a room 3 hours before checkout. The audacity and shamelessness was on complete display. And then we had no choice but to get nasty and shout. As women raised with some manners, we were ashamed of what levels we had to stoop to get basic customer service from a hotel that is widely appreciated in the city, charges the prices of a Taj or ITC, yet fails gloriously at living up to those rates.
Lastly, they had the audacity to give us bills for room service. I thank god that they saw how much grief and suffering they had put us through before our checkout. And had the sense to withdraw it.
But the damage was done. And we had no wish to traumatise our parents any further. So we took them to relatives’ place for rest before our flight.
Ranchi is my nani ghar. I have spent my childhood in the city. And adulthood as a student in Patna, where the same hotelier - Chanakya - has another hotel that I have heard good things about.
To leave with disease and dreadful experience from a place close to your heart is the worst thing a hotel can offer you. It is truly malicious intent on behalf of the hotel that deliberately put up rooms on booking sites without due consideration for customer experience in events of construction work or short staffing. Maybe also include staff training and sensitisation in that bucket.
BNR Chanakya- please do better. Please don’t push guests to a point where they have to turn into savages against a fellow human being. And raise your standards to the levels of Taj / ITC / Oberoi if you truly wish to...
Read moreChanakya BNR is a centrally located property right in front of Ranchi Railway Station. As soon as you enter the property you will beautifully surprised by greenery that will surround you. The building is divided into two parts one on left and right are heritage wing and main building is somewhat contemporary to its peers. I have always opted for heritage room and this time also I opted for heritage room on the ground floor. The rooms are massive with high ceilings giving it a feeling old luxury mansion, the beds also complements the old world charm of the room, the room has one sofa along with other basic amenities like TV, Mini Refrigerator (empty) writing desk with chair and a cup board along with Air Conditioner. Now if you see I have written all good about the room but I have rated it 3 because of the fact that the Hotel needs to work on its maintenance, like the bed linen needs to improve on its cleanliness, in the rooms you will find that several wear and tear which needs to be taken care of urgently.
The service also needs to improve because I had called housekeeping to clean my room thrice but no one responded to our request and ultimately I had to call reception for getting my room cleaned if want to know the timeline than I called up house keeping at 9 in the morning and I called up reception around 01.30.
Further, kitchen staff were also not willing to stretch a bit as I requested them to prepare a simple veg cutlet and they refused saying it's not in their menu and on another day I requested for Pudina Chatni which was also refused for reason apparent to them only. The breakfast buffet spread was kind of basic. I ordered beer but was not served with beer glass for some kind of policy which prevents them to serve beer in beer glass in the room also you have call them everytime you need to open bottle and they don't serve beer cans.
I have always stayed in chanakya whenever I am in Ranchi and things have gone south ( except for food) from what I experienced earlier maybe this is happened because of Covid 19 scenario and I will give the benefit of doubt to the hotel management with a request to look into the aforementioned issues and try to...
Read moreI attended a party at the Chanakya BNR Hotel and it was a pleasant experience overall. The hotel's impressive capacity and ample parking space made it convenient for guests to gather without feeling crowded or struggling to find parking. Upon arrival, the well-organized parking area allowed for easy access to the venue, setting a positive tone for the evening.
The event space itself was impressive, with enough room for guests to move freely and comfortably. The hotel's ability to accommodate a significant number of attendees without sacrificing comfort is commendable. It's evident that Chanakya BNR Hotel values the convenience of its guests and has thoughtfully designed its spaces to cater to large gatherings.
The ambiance at the party venue was enchanting, with a soothing theme and atmospheric lighting. The combination of elegant décor and well-chosen music created a festive atmosphere, making it a joyous celebration for everyone.
However, I must admit that the food fell short of expectations. While the presentation was nice and the service was prompt, the taste didn't quite match up. Some dishes lacked the flavor and finesse one would expect at a venue of this caliber. It was disappointing, considering the other positive aspects of the event.
In conclusion, Chanakya BNR Hotel excels in providing great capacity and convenient parking, making it an ideal venue for events like weddings, meetings, parties, and other small & big gatherings. The enchanting ambiance adds to the overall appeal of the hotel. Nevertheless, the food experience could use some improvement to match the high standard set by the other aspects of the party. Also this hotel is just in front of Ranchi Railway Station and thus it becomes easy for people...
