We arrived at Sam Ratulangi Airport by Batik Air and were immediately welcomed by Pak Johnny, our HiAce driver who drove us from the airport to the Megamas Compound where the boat drop off is. The journey from the airport to the boat drop off will take you around 30 minutes through Manado downtown and we did experience some traffic in some areas. Our driver was very informative about Manado cuisine and customs, so those 30 mins were just fine. We were expected by the boat crew who then took us on an approx. 30 mins journey to Bunaken Island. Due to weather (and I also believe water current conditions) the latest boat would leave Megamas port by around 1600 hrs local time. At Bunaken Island (at Bastianos Resort) we were welcomed by Paul who briefed us about the Do-and-Donts at the place. We also paid a IDR 150,000 fee for each foreign tourists and submitted our IDs for the staff to make a fotocopy of. Although I am an Indonesian, the fee was the same. (Later I saw that only me and my sister were local tourists. The resort is mostly visited by foreign tourists from Germany and Austria) Breakfast is at 0700. Lunch at 1300. Dinner at 1900 and during all times there are snacks and some beverages (tea, coffee, kakao drinks) available. Reception is the main point to ask about everything. Wifi password was given (although you should expect that the Wifi will not work all times). If you want to go for a walk there is only 1 way : either you go right and will arrive at the next village by 1hr walking distance, or your go left and arrive at another next village by 45mins walking distance. The rooms are mostly wooden. They will provide you with 1 water gallon for your drinking water in your room. This one you will need, because the tapwater is quite salty. I realized that they do their best to provide you with electricity. At least 2 times per day, the electricity will be turned out for a second.. I assume that is when the hotel management switches the generators. To my surprise there are almost no mosquitos at the resort (I visited Bastianos during end Oct - beginning Nov 2023). The staff are very friendly. There are three cooks who do a fantastic job in providing tasty local food. They like to sing together and play on some self made music instruments to entertain the guests. I realized that me and my sister were the only local tourists during our stay. The resort is mostly visited by foreign tourists. Thus the staff were a bit surprised when we spoke in Bahasa Indonesia with them 😀 The place is quite remote and you can see the sea right from your room. Sun set you can just enjoy by sitting in the chairs they provide in front of every room. It is a magnificant view. So quiet and peaceful. Even during night time the only thing you will hear is the soft sound of waves and some birds and insects chirping. This atmosphere (and the wifi which does not work in the rooms, the limited coverage from local mobile-providers) makes Bastianos Resort a very good place to just turn off from your hectic all-day routines. At a price of USD 30 per person per day you can rent snorkeling gear and go on a boat to the reef. (Bastianos has several fixed boat schedules for divers and snorkelers) : there was the morning 0530 morning dive, 0830 morning dive with 2 dives, 1500 afternoon dive and the night dive. Since I am not a diver, we participated 1 day and joined the 0830 trip with 2 dives / snorkeling opportunies. Although we did not dive, we learned a lot about diving from the divers during the trip and took our time to snorkel. The area is so full of fish, turtles, corrals and anemones. It is really a great place to snorkel (and I heard also to dive). Just make sure you put your sunscreen on. I made the mistake to not re-applying enough sunscreen for my second snorkelling and later on got sunburned legs.. 😏 Every group will be lead by a guide who knows the area well (the divers by their guide were briefed before diving all along with him, and we-the snorkellers were also accompanied by our own guide) We came came back at ard 1230

Chilled and relaxed vibe here at Bastianos Bunaken. Room was comfortable and everything worked well. The bed was very comfy too. We did like the lounge next to the restaurant the most. It is a fantastic place to wind down after a day full of diving, drinking coffee (or a Bintang), read a book or just talk to your buddy. The food is good but it is not on a „wow“ level. The staff at Bastianos Bunaken is truly fantastic. Always smiling, helping you with whatever you‘ll need. And then of course, the very best here is the diving itself! Top class dive spots with an abundance of healthy corals, lots of fish, turtles flying all over you. We would definitely stay here again!

Having dived in Lembeh before, I picked Bunaken for the wall dives. ||||Our flight was 3 hours late so we arrived at the port at night. The resort doesn't normally provide boat transfers at night but they waited for us and we were thankful that we didn't waste a night at Manado. Check in was smooth and Mike and his team provided a very comprehensive review of the resort and dive operations.||||The resort is old, and the rooms show some wear and tear. We got the rooms facing the beach. Upside - great views. Downside - the air conditioning cannot cope with the afternoon sun. There is no tv in the room and wifi was at best spotty at the reception area. I recommend you get a local sim card if you really need to stay in touch. Reception can be stronger at sea.||||Boat and dive services were excellent and the rental equipment was quite new. The boat crews are very organised and our DM, Rio was excellent. Most dives are nearby and no more than 15 min ride. The blue seas and the visibility were fantastic but after a while, a wall dive was a wall dive. We went to a local muck dive area but they paled compared to Lembeh.||||The one downside was the limited food choices, which tended to be catered for western palates. The kitchen drummed up some local dishes for us which was good but I felt that smaller resorts in Indonesia were generally more generous in the food offerings. I would have otherwise given them 5 stars.||||This is a luxury resort, so it didn't come cheap. However service...
