Last weekend myself and few my family members set off for what we thought was going to be an amazing spa break in whats classed as a 4 star luxury spa hotel , firstly i want to mention the grounds of the hotel and hotel itself are beautiful and the staff in the bar are amazing but other then that i was extremely disspointed in the weekend overall. My 30th birthday was suppose to be a chilled relaxing time and honestly it was far from it.
When we arrived on friday we checked into a courtyard suite as there was 5 of us and this was the only availabilty for a group of 5, the courtyard apts were lovely very spacious but unbarebaly hot. There was no shower gel, shampoo showecaps slippers or robes basic amenities id expect to find at a 4 star spa hotel, our apt whenever you turned on the water wether it was the sink shower or flushed the toiler there was a loud drill and pump like noise that echoed through the apt , it was also the case when our neighbours ran their water it echoed though our apt all night on friday this happened every 5-10 mins so nobody had a good night sleep, we rang the reception first thing at 9am and they sent someone to check, on checking they made us aware there was an issue with the plumbing system and we would need to move to an new apt ( extermely anoying as we were only there for 2 nights and had unpacked and decorated the apt for birthday celebrartions) however after paying €850 for the suite we wanted at least one good night sleep so we moved, not once did the hotel offer staff to help or even a kind gesture youd expect from a 4 star hotel , which spoke voumes to me.
On friday night we chose to dine in house which was fine food was good staff were fab but not much going on we asked would there be any entertainment on saturday night or would be have to go into the town , we were told there would be live music sat so we booked a table and had dinner for a second night in the hotel i asked when the music started and was told 10pm low and behold 10pm came and no music started so i asked again and was told the muscian cancelled last minute... no back up and no entertainment all weekend not exaxctly ideal. Just to reitierate we spent approx €400 over the two nights in the hotel on food and drinks.
We booked this back in may and were told by others we needed to book well in advance for the thermal suite which is a two hour slot you get over a weekend at a ''spa'' hotel i dont know any other spa hotel you book for 2 hours suite access 6 weeks in advance, anyways we were given 4 30 to 6 30 slot which didint really suit us but we had no other option. We arrived down to the spa at 4 20 and was told our slot was 2 30 to 4 30 and the 4 30 to 6 30 slot was booked out we were extremly annoyed at this point after planning our day around it and coming into be told this the lady said we could go in to 4 30 slot and we had to pay a €15 charge per head as we were in the suites not the hotel which we werent told about on booking the stay or booking the thermal suite access we asked to speak to a supervisor who eventually appeared at 4 45 ( 15 mins into the 2 hour slot) she didint do anything for us so was really a waste of time after we voiced our greivances about the times, fees and just general service. we paid the €15 each and was also charged a€2.50 fee for slippers AGAIN ABSOLUTLEY RIDICULOUS from a 4 star luxury spa resort. shocked to say the least. The thermal suites were overpacked and crowded and there was no relax element to it it was like been in the aquatic centre on a summers day. NOT GOOD. we thought we would finish up our session in the ''relax'' room which was not clean. The session before us had left empty glasses, wet towels and used face towels which nobody cleared up. just not what we had pictured from this hotel at all.
At three points of this trip ( 2 days) we aired our greivances on the room , the spa & the entertainment and not once did anyone actually do anything or offer apologies everyone had to pass it onto management who again never got in contact with us once...
Read moreSo we had booked in for a couple of nights and were a bit uneasy about what we’d find after having read some of the reviews on here
On check-in the receptionist was beyond lovely; & for absolutely no reason she told us we didn’t have to check out until 1pm if we wanted on our final day, which was really a nice surprise
It was because of this gesture we were able to have breakfast, use the pool AND pack to check-out without a hurry, so thank you for that!
I’ve been at this hotel before and one of the only few negatives about it I would say is that they haven’t really done much to update it over the years. The bedroom itself was just average; no iron/ironing board; bathroom door was v.creaky & floor tiles had several chips in them. Major drawback was the absence of aircon & the room was like an inferno! We slept with the windows open. Not really what you’d expect from a 4-star hotel
A running theme throughout the stay in all parts of the hotel was the lovely staff; no issue whatsoever with anyone anywhere. Can’t fault their treatment of us
We had a few cocktails at the bar. They were really, really well-presented but at their cost we were disappointed to find they barely tasted of any alcohol. We switched to wine after that. Breakfast was fine; we saw some reviews describing the staff to be disorganised but we didn’t experience that. We do recommend that if you’re wanting toast with your breakfast, be sure to ask for it as soon as you sit down because it has to be fetched separately in the back & the 1st morning it arrived after we had already finished eating. Also surprised in a 4 star hotel to find that barista-made coffees had a separate charge. We would've been more amiable to maybe paying a “supplement” for them perhaps, but not at full normal coffeeshop prices?
I don’t really like them because they’re usually bland, but I saw on the menu that pancakes had a supplement charge? They’re just flour & eggs? I’ve stayed in numerous 4 star hotels & I’ve never seen anything on the menu asking for a supplement charge… there were no eggs made to order offered; just fried & scrambled Potato farls listed on the menu but nowhere to be seen (not that they were just out of them at the time; they just simply weren’t present at the counter)
I would also say that it would be more in keeping of a 4 star hotel to leave it as a buffet-style help yourself kinda breakfast setup but there was an attendant serving us the hot food items. Didn’t make me feel comfortable to ask for seconds lol
The continental breakfast options were pretty good
The Oceo Spa……. well well well. It was practically perfect. Decent-sized pool with permanently running jets in the corner of it; great for a water massage! Just across and outside was a giant jacuzzi - I think we probably spent most of our time in the pool out there to be honest! Such an experience with the contrast of the hot bubbly water with the freezing cold open air. It was extremely pleasant & relaxing!! Locker / changing room facilities nothing short of excellent- showers were perfect & they came with beautiful-smelling shampoos & body gels. A little machine-thingy to spin-dry your togs & then a plastic bag dispenser with bags to carry them back up to your room! Changing rooms had electronically locked units which are easy to use. If I lived near Gorey I wouldn’t hesitate to get a membership to this facility! & a shoutout to the spa staff who were really patient with us, trying to book specific treatments with them around their therapists’ availabilities (not all treatments are available at any given time slot; it depends on the actual therapist giving them)
A warm thanks to Sharon for her unique Indian head massage! Very much enjoyed the spa experience
Note: the hotel in general has poor phone signal coverage so you do rely on the WiFi which did the job well! HOWEVER the spa isn’t equipped with WiFi so have your COVID certs etc. screenshotted in advance. Thank...
Read moreWe chose this hotel at the end of our trip as a spa and wellness hotel. It was a big disappointment and the costs were exorbitant. We had booked a package including 2 hours in the so-called thermal suite, the description of which suggested a supposedly private impression. Far from it. What they describe as such is merely the general spa area, which you have to reserve in advance. We had tried to do this by email before our stay, as well as requesting massage appointments. All emails remained unanswered. At check-in there was no adequate response and we were instructed to call or go directly to the spa from our room. We tried to call them but no one ever answered. So we went there and found that only very late slots were available. So we reorganized the whole evening only to discover after a few minutes in the spa area that this was also a failure. The saunas were small and not really hot, the indoor pool not warm, but with a waterfall decoration that constantly splashed in your face while you were bubbling. The outdoor pool was very hot, the jets didn't work properly and the smell was awful. From the outdoor pool you look out onto a structure that looks like being under a bridge, the large wall you look out onto is full of bird poo. The relax stone-chairs are ultra hot, you can't stand it for more than 5 minutes and you feel like you're being grilled. Fortunately there were no more available (and overpriced) massage appointments at such short notice, the other reviews here speak for themselves. The reception was very good at saying what they were not responsible for. Just as they were not responsible for reserving the spa slot or booking massage appointments, they were also not responsible for the gym, which of course you also have to reserve, which you can surprisingly also do via the phone in your room or in the gym on site during opening hours. The treatment of the receptionists was absolutely ridiculous, as was the whole hotel concept. How something like this can work is very questionable. The food in the Green Room was good, but the service was not. Just opening a bottle seemed very overwhelming and plates were cleared away while we were still eating. The interior design of the same restaurant was more illusion than reality, with dark curtains drawn in front of a window front that blocked the wonderful view of the greenery and the sunset. The heat was also building up in the room. Later in the evening, live music was playing in the hotel bar next door, but it was so incredibly loud that you had to shout at each other in the restaurant. The room with balcony was mediocre: The balcony was very dirty. There were cobwebs and bird poop everywhere, lots of bird poop. Also, the room came with its own pigeon living on the balcony. It had exactly one plastic chair on the balcony, in a double/twin room. In the room we found leftovers from the last guests, e.g. a used flip-flop and the kettle was heavily calcified. All in all, we regretted booking this hotel, even though the surroundings with paddocks and forest path to the beach were beautiful. The large hotel complex and the mass handling at reception and the lack of communication with guests and each other (reception/spa, gym) were more than disappointing and we do not recommend it to anyone, it is not worth the price. The hotel and their understanding of service and hospitality do not...
