This place is special. Up the hill from a very nice but slightly less well-frequented lakeside town of Salo, this bills itself as an ‘agro-touristic’ country house. This means it has great gardens and grounds, lots of beehives (the honey is served at breakfast and available to buy), olive oil and more. In proactive it’s a real contrast from the bustle of all the Garda places you’ll visit if you come here. It’s peaceful, very welcoming and slightly off the beaten path. There are only 9 rooms here and it’s located at the end of a narrow bumpy road. But it’s only 8 mins drive from the town. Rooms are small (our classic room didn’t really have enough space for two large suitcases, there was one wardrobe only and that didn’t even open properly because the door hit the bed). So initially I wasn’t best pleased but the place won me over. The gardens are really lovely and worth a stroll. There are horses and goats in the field next door. The landscaping is wonderful. Relaxing music is piped all over which normally would irritate me but it was really well chosen music and added to the ambience. There’s a very small pool too, which is nice to dip into on a warm afternoon. The welcoming staff are great and very helpful, although sometimes it can be hard to find someone. The restaurant is fabulous - have at least one dinner here. The view from the terrace is really nice too. You see a bit of the lake but lots of hills and trees. The place is very green. The hotel is finished to a high standard, although the rooms don’t have enough well- placed electric sockets that a modern high end hotel should have (I had to pull out a heavy bedside table to find the single socket, which then meant my wardrobe door wouldn’t even partly open. Yes, opening this wardrobe was a hassle). Yes, it’s a converted old country house so some allowances have to be made with the rooms, but not having plug points in this day and age is not really acceptable. But you forgive the place a few small issues as it’s just such a wonderful environment. It’s been a long time since I went to a hotel that actively made me smile constantly. The experience starts right away by being greeted on several occasions in German, sadly a bit symptomatic of southern areas in Lake Garda. We’re not Germans We’re in Italy

We paid 225€ a night with a discount fee, our empathy goes to clients who paid plain price.

Let’s be honest, the environment where the hotel is located is beautiful, the garden is perfectly well curated, we wish the same effort was put into the rooms.

The walls are super thin, you can hear your neighbours as if you were staying in a cheap hotel along a highway. The mattresses are perhaps the most outrageous. Inconsistent to the point where you either end up having your feet outside the bed sheets and your back hurts in the morning because you basically end up digging a whole in it.

We had ants in the sheets and the bathroom was borderline clean. Water flow from the shower is not constant, so you have to be patient. Cherry on the cake, the cleaning lady left a wet towel on my pullover! Bravo.

You have to write down what you will have for breakfast the next morning. I get the idea, but we’re paying 225€ a night, continental buffet is the standard. Congratulations to the man doing the job (almost) alone, super friendly and professional.

They display lots of activities and amenities but the pool is 4,5 square meters and the spa is a whopping 95€ extra, only under reservation! Not to mention that we had to look ourselves for these activities, nothing except the spa was mentioned when checking in.

We manifested our discontent the first day, but did not receive any kind of support except a suggestion to book the suite, for 500€ a night (HA! No way).

You’ve guessed it, quality/price ratio is definitely not at the rendez-vous. We felt robbed. Do not recommend, won’t be back...

Abbiamo scelto Borgo Il Mezzanino spinti dalle recensioni eccellenti, trovandolo quasi per caso. L’accesso è semplice dalla strada principale, ma l’ultimo tratto – Via del Monte – è una stretta via privata dal fondo sconnesso, non adatta a vetture sportive.

Dopo questa via angusta si giunge all’ingresso dell’agriturismo, dove un grande cancello metallico introduce a una tenuta immersa nel verde. Tutta la struttura si sviluppa in salita, inclusi i parcheggi, ampi ma in pendenza. All’interno della strada interna, la prima volta ci si sente spaesati: la reception è poco segnalata. Tuttavia, appena ci si trova davanti, ogni incertezza svanisce. L’ingresso è curato e suggestivo, e il salotto attiguo trasmette subito un’atmosfera calda e accogliente.

Avevamo prenotato una Romantic Suite, molto ampia, con vasca idromassaggio funzionante – forse un po’ piccola – e un letto tondo coreografico. La stanza è circondata da finestre su ogni lato e ha soffitti alti in legno. Il bagno è ampio, seppur privo di finestra, dotato comunque di un buon sistema di aspirazione.

Purtroppo, avendo prenotato solo per una notte, non ci è stato possibile accedere alla spa, che richiede prenotazione anticipata – informazione che non ci era stata comunicata. Inoltre, erano disponibili solo accappatoi fino alla taglia L, dettaglio che sarebbe utile indicare in fase di prenotazione, consigliando eventualmente di portare il proprio.

Il giardino esterno è enorme, con un prato curatissimo. In questo periodo dell’anno le fioriture sono uno spettacolo meraviglioso e il paesaggio circostante è davvero incantevole.

La cena è stata il momento più sorprendente. Ci hanno riservato un tavolino in una sala raccolta, con pochi coperti. Fin da subito, il personale si è mostrato disponibile: forse non il servizio più formale o tecnico, ma sicuramente accogliente nel modo giusto.

Abbiamo aperto con tagliatelle al ragù di selvaggina, fuori menù: saporite, umide, con una sfoglia che trattiene perfettamente il condimento.

Di secondo, filetto d’agnello cotto a puntino, con interno rosa e accompagnato da un cavolo rosso ben contrastato e armonico.

Il dessert è stato straordinario: una piccola ciambella di gelato ricoperta di cioccolato e granella tipo Rocher, adagiata su una base di cremoso fondente, con biscotto al cioccolato e crumble croccante. Un dolce elegante e irresistibile. Ottimo anche il caffè, accompagnato da un dolcetto offerto dallo chef: un gesto semplice, ma curato e significativo.

La notte è trascorsa in totale tranquillità. La colazione va necessariamente preordinata, scelta che garantisce la massima freschezza. Il check-out è stato veloce, su nostra richiesta, dovendo partire molto presto.

In sintesi, Borgo Il Mezzanino è una realtà che ha già l’anima di una struttura d’eccellenza: paesaggio, cucina, comfort e charme ci sono tutti. Alcune piccole lacune nei servizi, come l’accesso alla spa o la comunicazione di dettagli logistici, impediscono per ora un salto qualitativo decisivo. Ma con poco, potrebbe diventare una vera destinazione di riferimento. Per ora, resta una perla rara…...
