We love this family-run hotel and its stunning location - 2000m above sea level in a National Park - so much that we have stayed there for two weeks in September for the last couple of years. Hohe Gaisl is located in a high mountain valley of rolling green meadows, bounded by magnificent mountain peaks on all sides. It’s the perfect base for exploring the network of walking trails that head off in every direction (ski walking or cross country skiing in winter). The Mairhofer family have created a very comfortable hotel for their guests. The rooms are decorated simply in traditional style with an abundance of wood, and come with excellent showers, comfortable mattresses and in many cases fantastic views from balconies. The hotel is reached via a tarmac road that climbs up to the Prato Piazza plateau, taking around 25 minutes. Most visitors leave the car lower down and get a bus up the mountain, or have to pay for access by car, but hotel guests get a free pass. Due to its relative remoteness the hotel offers a ‘three quarters’ board option – consisting of breakfast, tea (soup, sandwiches, cakes etc) from 3.00pm-5pm, and a five course dinner. The food was plentiful and tasty and we found it a refreshing change to have all your catering needs taken care of. There are extensive lounge areas to relax in after dinner and enjoy a drink. Maria Mairhofer, her son Karlheinz and daughter Nadia are very hands-on with the running of the hotel, and go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. The hotel also has an indoor swimming pool and a variety of sauna treatments that help ease away the aches and pains from walking the trails. We generally like to travel to new holiday destinations each year, but this hotel, and its stunning location, has made us want to return...

The hotel is surrounded by mountain fields, slopes, forests and faces the huge Croda Rossa, a rocky mountain with red layers. There is no passing-through traffic and you can enjoy a wonderful natural silence and pure air. From the hotel you can hike and reach the summit of Monte Specie and from there enjoy the view of the Dolomites mountains, including the world-famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The lake of Braies is near by and can be reached by car or bus + hiking. Staying at the hotel as been great, starting with a generous buffet breakfast in the morning, relaxing, after hiking, with snacks and soups in the afternoon and later in the wellness center. Dinners were also great. The staff is kind and welcoming. Rooms are very comfortable. Just be aware that the road that climbs to the hotel is quite narrow ( therefore we preferred to leave our car parked at the hotel during our stay): also be aware they do not accept...
