Takayu Onsen Tamagoyu — Hotel in Honshu

One of the best onsen experience in Japan. The facility: while a bit aging, it is still very acceptable on many levels. Plus, bedrooms are japanese style, clean and spacious. You are given an onsen set upon arrival, a tea set and a few local sweets. You can hear the sound of the river from the bedrooms. Some may find it a bit noisy but I personally loved it. The dinner and breakfast: delicious traditional Japanese food is served. Breakfast was excellent too. I only wished they had coffee. The bath: this is the best part. There are two bath inside the facility and three others outside (rotenburo), plus one more exclusively for ladies. The baths (wooden structures) are very well designed and charming. The water is very white, rich and smells like a real onsen. There is a foot bath also. The water may be a bit hot but that depends on people's tastes I guess. Really pretty onsen in the mountains of Fukushima. Staff is really lovely and friendly and helpful. Greeting was excellent. And they catered a beautiful vegetarian ryokan meal for me and my friends (we specified no meat or fish, including fish broth and gelatin, and they did a bang-up job). The baths are gorgeous, with the rustic huts and the blue sulfur water. ||||The hotel is a little worn around the edges, with some scuff marks and a few stains. JR福島駅から17kmほどの高湯温泉。山形の蔵王温泉・白布温泉とともに奥州三高湯と呼ばれ、源泉は「滝の湯」「仙気の湯」といった名前が付けられている。これは昔の共同浴場の名残で、当時は源泉のすぐ側や真上に浴槽があったという。

毎分3,000リットル以上もの豊富な湯量をほこる源泉は全部で10箇所あり、人の手を加えずに自然湧出する温泉は100パーセント源泉かけ流し。また、地形の落差だけを利用して浴槽まで引湯する自然流下を行い、加温加水を一切行わず、自然から溢れ出たままの姿で湯を満たす。

自然湧出する湯量豊富な白濁の硫黄泉の泉質は、酸性・含硫黄（硫化水素型）－アルミニウム・カルシウム硫酸塩温泉（硫黄泉）で、神経痛やリウマチ、皮膚病、婦人病などの他、美人の湯としても知られている。

高湯の入浴法は「三日一廻り、三廻り十日」。これは高湯湯治に必要な日数で、一廻り目で身体を湯にならし、二廻り目で身体の悪い部分がとれ、三廻り目で改善効果を感じられるというもの。

高湯温泉にある旅館玉子湯。 玉子湯の名前は、温泉に入ると肌が玉子のように滑らかになることと、匂いがゆで卵に似ていることから由来。

施設内には萱ぶき湯小屋「玉子湯」・露天風呂「天渓の湯」・貸切露天風呂「瀬音」・大浴場「滝の湯」・内湯「仙気の湯」・足湯「のんびり足湯」などがある。

平日の15時頃伺い、チェックイン。特にウェルカムドリンク的なものは無いが、ロビーには無料で飲めるコーヒーサーバーがある。車を降りた時から硫黄(正確には硫化水素)の匂いが濃く、船酔いしたような感覚に陥る。今回は三廻り十日まではいかないが、三日一廻り相当で2泊する予定。実際3日目には匂いの不快感は随分少なくなっていた。

＊【季節の会席コース】温泉を楽しむならこのプラン［1泊２食付］18,480円 スタンダード和室＜10畳／バスなし・トイレ付＞ 部屋は温泉旅館らしい和室で、夕飯時に布団を敷いてくれる。窓からの景色は濃い緑と源泉が望め、良い感じ。温泉は高温で肩まで浸かると長くは持たない。腰まで、足だけとか工夫しながら楽しむ。それにしても匂いが濃い。

＊麦焼酎 玉子湯300ml 1,500円 ＊レモン330円 夕食は18:30から花山水で。温かいのは蓋物・茶碗蒸し・しゃぶしゃぶ・ご飯・味噌汁。量は適度で、味も悪くない。お酒は旅館価格ですな。

朝食も同じ場所で7:30～。野菜サラダより蒸篭蒸しの温野菜の方が好ましい。コーヒーなどのドリンクはセルフで取りに行く。それにしてもイカ人参が朝から出てくると一杯飲みたくなるのに困った。
