I booked the SUP and tent sauna package for 2 adults and 1 child a couple of months in advance.
A week before the date, they sent me an email stating that if my child will be charged an extra fee to join in the SUP and tent sauna activity, if not, she will not be allowed to enter the river, not even for just playing. I was confused because I had booked a stay package including the activity for 2 adults and 1 child, but it turns out the child fee is not already included (so the accommodation fee and food is included in the package but not the activity?) I agreed to pay the fee (surely I must right? Did they expect me to leave my child alone somewhere while the parents go to do the activity?)but it would have been better if it were in the terms already stated upon booking.
On the day of stay itself, I received another email in the morning at 10.30am stating that the activity has been cancelled because of the river condition. We were disappointed as I had chosen this particular glamping facility specially because they offered this SUP and tent sauna activity by the river. As my Japanese language ability is poor, I got a friend to call them and ask if I could cancel our booking due to this unforeseen situation. My request to cancel was rejected.
Ok, I arrived a few minutes before 3pm. When I tried to enter the reception area, I was told to fill in my name on the waiting list and wait outside. In the sun! Check-in started around 3.05pm.
At check-in, I again expressed my disappointment at the cancelled activity and asked since cancellation was not permitted for our stay, could they at least offer me a discount? They said they can’t do that. I understand that the activity cannot proceed because of reasons beyond our control. However, isn’t customer satisfaction part of being in the service and hospitality industry? Even if a discount is not possible, some sort of service recovery effort should have been made at this point. Perhaps offering a voucher for use at the gift shop or a one time complimentary use of the private bath would have smoothed it over.
Accommodation- The trailer that I stayed in was dusty. There’s accumulated dust along the doors, windows and corners. There were some sort of flying insects hovering at the inner parts of the bunk beds which made sleeping there traumatic. The curtains need to be washed. I chose trailer accommodation because it was the only type that had an attached toilet and shower but the shower hose was nailed to the wall so I couldn’t take it down to wash my child. In the end, I booked the private bath.
Food- If you love bread, you will be satisfied. They give each person half a loaf of French baguette for dinner and breakfast. Other than bread, everything else is small portion. There is no dessert.
Private bath- appeared clean at first. As I was showering, I noticed a cockroach on the glass door, needless to say, I got out quickly. When I took the towel, there was a spider on it. Yes I know we are in nature, but i couldn’t even enjoy the bath time. Please install electronic insect repellent in the changing area.
Price- glow sticks sold at daiso are more than double the price at the reception area. Management, please take note, service recovery could easily have been done here simply by offering the guest a couple of light sticks or hanabi when the activity is cancelled.
Overall- I was tickled to see that for each review posted on Google, we could exchange for a souvenir mug at the front desk. I booked this place after reading many good reviews, is this how you get them? Save your mugs, we don’t need them.
For the price paid, this facility does not live up to expectations. Do not expect any kind of Omotenashi here. Basically, they want to charge you for everything.
Ps: I stayed at another glamping facility at yamanakako. For the same price, I got a dome tent with a huge attached private bathroom, a view of Mt Fuji and the food(meat, seafood, vegetables and even dessert!) was so much that we couldn’t finish it all. Ufufu, you...
