Oct 2023. An excellent relaxing stay! We arrived via bus and we were a tad early so we waited in the hotel waiting area. The bus stops directly outside the hotel. The hotel staff at main reception speak good English. They will spell out all the details for when dinner is served and when breakfast is served in the dining room. We were provided a choice of Yakata for my wife at check in. I used the one provided in the room.
We stayed on 2nd floor. The private onsen in the room was perfect. Just big enough for 2 people to sit side by side. Can easily control water temperature by adding cold water via a set of taps. The standing shower next to the tub had 2 different shower heads and was perfect for cooling off between bathing. Our outdoor onsen overlooked the river and maple trees and the outside is lit up at night to provide a view even when it’s dark. The onsen water is sulphuric so expect a smell.
Our room was a large tatami mat area with a single dining table and a small sitting area. Both western murphy beds and floor mattresses were were provided. We chose the western beds and they were comfortable. Once the kaiseki dinner was done we called to the desk and they sent people to remove the dinnerware , pack up the dining table, and set up our beds. The room includes a coffee and tea setup and also water is provided. There is a small fridge as well.
The kaiseki meal was enjoyable and artfully prepared. I felt a bit uninitiated to the whole process of it. It was served all at once instead of in individual courses. A menu identifying what each course is was provided in English which was helpful. We payed for the beef dinner which included a beef sukiyaki dish. However most of the plates were still of raw fish and local dishes. We both enjoyed it and next time I’ll do more research on kaiseki. The binder of info in the room included an English food and drink menu with extra options that can be ordered from the front desk.
Breakfast the following morning was in the dining room and was also a traditional breakfast similar to the kaiseki dinner. Do not expect western food.
Overall a very relaxing stay and I would highly recommend. We only stayed the one night but it would be great to plan for a second night to get the most...
Read moreIn early February 2019 during the lunar new year holiday, we decided to get away from home to have some quieter time. We picked Fudouguchikan for its proximity to the Osaka city. It’s a small onsen hotel with great service. I made a request for skipping shell seafood due to allergy but it ended up that they were unable to replace all shell seafood on the menu. They were quite apologetic about it, for which the server sent us two glasses of ume (plum) wine—my favorite—telling us that they were “on the house”. Nice. We were very happy with the traditional Japanese dinner which was served in our room. The next morning, we had Japanese breakfast together with other guests. Again the food was excellent and the server friendly and attentive. Oh did I mention the ume tea they served us when we checked in? It was so tasty that I bought one box at the souvenir shop. The highlight of the stay was our room with a private outdoor bath. We also liked the special experience of tatami bedding. Upon checking out, we boarded the shuttle bus and happily found that the driver was the one who made our bed the night before! Yes, it’s how small this onsen hotel was. Overall, we enjoyed our stay in Fudouguchikan and will certainly be back when we next...
