I’ll start with the good things first.

The first thing is what attracted us to this hotel in the first place: Large outdoor onsen for both genders. You have to wear a cotton swimwear style garment to make this coop bathing possible, but my wife and I enjoyed the time soaking together a lot, esp when the air is still cold with the lingers of late winter chill, where the steam from the heated water all the more magical.

However that’s all that’s good about this hotel. The onsen water is barely warm enough. For such a size, simple zoning could easily offer a range of temperatures for different users.

The spring water is so diluted that it could have been tape water.

The onsen floor is made of rocks (imitation rocks) laid together quite unevenly, creating traps for trips and falls. Sharp edges here and there are pppp p the bulbs are in the process of the bulbs and the bulbs are in the bulbs and safety hazards as well.

The changing and shower room preceding entry to the onsen (for those of you who don’t know, you should take a shower to cleanup before entering an onsen) is tiny. The nude bodies of strangers of the same sex in various ages and physiques get too close to yours.

So much for onsen. The guest room is spacious in Japanese standard but it is the worse we have been: no hand towel, no face towels, no hanging set up for towels, no where to put your clothes in the bathroom, only two sockets available for everything.

If you reserved a non-smoking room, make sure to repeat that when checkin. Even in the cigarette free floor, smell of burnt tobacco is still impregnated in a few areas.

The shower in your own room gets either too hot or too cold. It is a safer bet to clean yourself in the hotel’s public bath.

The worst is the dinner buffet. There are a good enough variety, just the quality or the cooking were poor. We did not expect much from a buffet, but this one far exceed our tolerance for mediocrity. I have to mention in particular the crab, which is supposed to be a Hokkaido specialty, but the chef seems to think salt deserves more of visitors’ attention.

And this place...

Ryokan situated near the SOUNKYOU 43rd Ice Fall Festival venue in a scenic area near the highway. Hotel connected to new wing ANNEX SHIKI via up and down stairs and elevator access of same level but different floor of each building.||||ONSEN||||Gender segregated indoor onsen at basement floor. Onsen not 24 hours, but has a lovely outdoor onsen resembling a tropical pool. Unfortunately onsen temperature uneven, as some areas warm and not hot. Can also be windy and snowy…… ||The communal baths change-room can be crowded at near closing time, as there are only 4 hairdryers and limited seating. Yukata can be worn on hotel premises. ||||NOTE: BATHSUITS provided for outdoor onsen, which is UNISEX! Chocolate one-piece siesta-like and baggy shorts costume is the standard gear for the outdoor hotspring.||||FOOD||||Lacks variety||Typical tourist group meals provided, with hot pot food selection. Each person also entitled to one serving of the Hokkaido crab leg, 1 portion per person dished out by the chef.||Beverage limited at dinner, as only 2 options of iced/hot green tea. Thankfully the hot pot soup was thirst-quenching. Bar available serving alcohol drinks, non-inclusive with meal.||||ROOMS||||XTRA-LARGE Family Tatami rooms (we were a group of 4), like a mini-apartment with a sun/snow room with tea-table and chairs to admire the magnificent mountain views. There was a convenient partition between the “lounge” and “tatami main bedroom” area. ||||The front door entrance was decorated with origami birds and ornaments and had a wooden gate. There were no teabags, coffee in the room, but a convenience store and vending machines located in the hotel. Futons (bedding-like a glorious sleeping-bag) were nicely laid out and comfortable. Bathroom designed as a mini-hot spring tub, which the kids enjoyed.||||SUMMARY;||||PLUS: HUGE SPACIOUS SUITES||MINUS: LACK OF BEVERAGE VARIETY IN ROOMS AND||HOTEL should offer more beverage options, or at least...

My experience at this hotel was incredibly disappointing. I stayed there from October 2nd to October 3rd, 2023, the first day staying just as normal as it can be but here are my major concerns: 1) One of the hotel staff displayed a poor service mind, and it seemed there was a language barrier issue. During my stay, my 7-year-old son politely asked for a used newspaper in English, saying, "May I have used newspaper?" This simple request was met with rude and harsh responses from one of the employees. It appeared that the employee might not have understood English, and instead of trying to communicate or assist, they responded with a string of loud "No's." This not only startled my son but almost brought him to tears. Fortunately, another more considerate employee, who appeared to have a better grasp of English, happened to pass by and kindly provided us with the newspaper we had requested. This initial encounter with the staff, and the subsequent assistance from a different employee, left a negative and lasting impression on our stay. 2) The hotel is old, overpriced, and unclean. It's both expensive and old, with parking located below. The rooms were not properly maintained, with visible dust and even remnants of a previous guest's menstrual stain on the bedsheet. Despite the high cost, the amenities and cleanliness were subpar. Additionally, the air conditioner was not working at all, leaving us unable to adjust the room temperature during our stay. 3) Accessibility and room size were major issues. The parking area on the ground floor was inconveniently distant from the 5th-floor reception, making it challenging to transport luggage. Furthermore, the room I booked for 4 people was cramped and required me to rearrange furniture just to create enough space for three people. The room was significantly smaller than advertised, with limited walking space. Overall, my stay at this hotel was extremely unsatisfactory and far from what I expected.

We reserved the hotel as a bit more expensive than the ones that we usually reserve as a special occasion on our trip to Hokkaido. However the service was very poor from the moment we arrived that despite the nice bath, it was difficult to have a good experience of the hotel. We pulled into the parking lot at about 5PM and were trying to figure out where to park but got little direction from the staff in the parking lot. We were told to have one person checkin and the other wait in the car but were not told wait for what. About about 15 minutes in the parking lot I was finally told that they were directing us to a nearby parking structure (which turned out just to be a 3 minute walk away, if they had just shared information earlier I would have just walked the 3 minutes instead of wait 15 minutes in the parking lot) The most inexcusable part was the ride back from the parking garage, it was a small car (Honda Civic, Photo) and crammed 4 of us into it. Were they using somebody's personal car to transport people? Why didn't they have a proper van? If they had a van they could have gotten people back from the parking lot much much faster. When I got back to the hotel the parking lot was a complete zoo (photo) and I went to the lobby expecting my partner to be logged in but he was still waiting and had been given a number. We waiting another 20 minutes to be checked it. At supper (we had the shabu-shabu course) the staff didn't bring the rice to any of the table until we asked. It felt as if it was her first day and wasn't being given any support. The table next us had practically finished their meal by the time the staff finally got their rice. From the look of the breakfast as well it appears as though none of the food is cooked onsight.
