Wonderful hotel nestled on the middle of a mountain facing Sakurajima and Kagoshima. It’s part of the Hoshino Resorts chain of high-quality hotels. While many Hoshino hotels are renovated from other hotels, this one was built from the ground up. The service here is impeccable, the views are incredible, the the food is wonderful. Many of the rooms have their own baths, but there is also a full onsen down the hill, accessible using an electric tram that guests operate themselves. The ride itself provides a great view as you go up or down. Each side of the onsen has two indoor baths (one hot, one warm) and an outside rotenburo. Every night in the drink lounge (no alcohol served there) there is a taiko performance based on the area’s Takachiho history. The food is all full-course kaiseki at both breakfast and dinner. The beds are a bit too soft for me, and there were no comfortable chairs to sit on in the room. You’ll need to ask for some basics like razors for shaving and soap and a towel for the toilet. One more nice thing to add would be a J1772 charger for those of us driving up the mountain in electric cars. Having written those criticisms, I would fully recommend this hotel to anyone looking to relax in beautiful environment. Thanks for the great stay! Also, a special shout-out to N. Chan for the...

We came her in Feb 2022 for a weekend getaway from the city. Glad we did.All of the room will have a city view but if you book one of the corner rooms, you will not only get a nice tatami area for viewing but will have a city and mountain view, but be sure to get the top 2 floors for the best view. Also, if you book rooms ending in 01, 02, or 03, these will be closest to the elevators (the rooms were pretty well insulated against noise).||||The property also has a public onsen bath. To access it take a short automatic tram ride to a separate lounge area stocked with ice cream and drinks, then a short walk to the bath house. Along the way you will see a few cabanas that you can use to have a nice picnic when the weather permits.||||Meals are served in a semi-private space, meaning you will have a room but noice from the other guest do bleed through since the walls do not go all the way up to the ceiling. Food was great. For breakfast, the hotel knew that I hated to look for small pin bones in the fish so intead the substituted it for stewed pork. ||||The staff also performed one of the local legends after dinner, don't miss it.||||Overall, its a great hotel with...

The view is almost always spectacular with Kai and Hoshino establishments, and while I think the view and onsen themselves are worth the visit, staff training seems to be somewhat inconsistent. Some staff we came across were very sweet and friendly, but some felt rather disingenuous or even cold. Of course, I understand as it is only a job, and they are simply there to make a living, but it’d be nice to experience that famous Japanese hospitality which goes above and beyond, or thinking one step ahead of the guests. Given that, I empathise that handling international (non-Japanese) guests may be tricky, but there may also be the issue with Kai/Hoshino cooperates as a whole. Hopefully, the company will provide better training or incentives for both the employees and guests wellbeing. Pickup service would also be appreciated, and please think further about sustainability and reducing waste. The cultural performance was awe-inspiring but it’d be perfect if there was a board explaining it in other languages. Overall, I’d stay again for the unique experience of taking a cable car to the onsen.

I stayed at Kai Kirishima in June 2024, but I'm writing this review now after experiencing all three Kai resorts within a year. As my first stay with the Hoshino Kai brand, I was impressed by how unique the experience was compared to other Hoshino Resorts like Karuizawa, Oirase, Bandaisan, Tomamu Tower, and OMO Chains. The view of Sakurajima from the room is stunning, and the terrace resting area made for a perfect spot to relax. The tram ride to the onsen added a special touch to the experience. I opted for the breakfast, dinner, and room package, and I must say the meals were definitely worth it. Since Kai resorts are typically located far from stations and without nearby restaurants or stores (unless you're driving), having the meals included was very convenient. However, I recommend staying up to two nights—by the third night, the meals felt repetitive and we started to feel a bit bored with the menu. Overall, Kai Kirishima is a beautiful retreat and a great introduction to the Kai experience, blending modern luxury with nature, and I highly recommend it for a peaceful getaway.
