This is a traditional sort of hot spring ryokan, or inn. It is located on a steep hillside at the foot of Mt. Gozaisho, within easy walking distance of the Gozaisho Ropeway (cable car). The staff are very friendly and the service is fine. We all (there were 8 in our group) found the food to be excellent. Dinner was kaiseki-style Japanese cuisine, and there were perhaps 20 dishes in all. Breakfast was buffet-style. Again, everything was excellent. The hot spring is not of the smelly, sulfuric sort. Rather, it contains minerals that leave the skin soft and smooth. Our rooms on the 5th floor also had baths, but I would recommend using the large, communal baths on the 2nd floor instead. There are rotenburo (outdoor baths) as well. The hotel has a lovely garden, which was being improved and enlarged during our visit. The hotel is located in Yunoyama, a hot spring town that seems to have seen better days. A fresh and fast running mountain river cascades through the center of town. There was fresh snow during our stay. There are busses to the town of Yunoyama. The location of the hot spring town makes it ideal for hikers and...

Despite the signs around town (and ryokan) that Yunoyama is not the tourist drawcard it used to be, the facilities, food and location of this ryokan were extremely enjoyable. The welcome and staff were great. The room was spacious and had a balcony. Dinner in our room and breakfast downstairs were perhaps better than the more expensive ryokan we stayed in the following night (another city). I only used the general bath (I think there's a facility you can book and pay extra for) and it was very nice with an indoor and outdoor pool with a mountain view. Great location for walkers/climbers or ropeway with access to tracks/ropeway just a few mins walk from memory. While overnight is enough time for a visit, I fail to see why this is not a more popular place for overnighters from Yokkaichi or Nagoya. A walk up the river in the afternoon, an overnight stay at Kotobukitei, and a gondola up the mountain with a walk around the top made for a...

In mid-May, on a Sunday, my family of three, including my son in his final year of elementary school, enjoyed our stay at Kotobuki-tei, located near Mount Gozaisho in Mie Prefecture. The journey from Osaka took us about three hours, with a pleasant stop for a meal at Hari IC. Despite a bit of rain, we had a great time riding the ropeway up Mount Gozaisho.
Kotobuki-tei is just a three-minute drive from the Gozaisho Ropeway station. We arrived a bit early, but they kindly allowed us to check in ahead of schedule.
Entering through an elevator from the street, we were greeted by a beautiful courtyard. The inn, a renovated historic ryokan, had a calm and pleasant atmosphere. We had requested a nicer room and were given a corner room on an upper floor. Opening the windows revealed a stunning view of the Gozaisho Ropeway and, in the distance, the sea toward Nagoya.
We enjoyed the private onsen bath located in the courtyard, making for a wonderfully secluded experience.
Dinner was served in our room, which was the main reason we chose this ryokan. The meal was generous and delicious. We also indulged in the "venison sashimi" spotted on a poster by the elevator, which was superb. Additionally, since it was my birthday, my wife had arranged for a surprise dessert birthday plate, which was thoughtfully prepared by the staff.
The next morning, breakfast was served buffet style in a large hall and was impressively varied.
After checking out, we toured "Suiunkaku," the ryokan's old main building. We admired the curved Taisho-era glass and the luxurious use of rare woods.
Our stay was brief but incredibly pleasant, thanks to the meticulous attention from the manager and the young attendants. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and hope to return to Kotobuki-tei whenever the...
