What a magical place with fantastic hosts! Hideo and his wife Yukako carved out a nice life for themselves and their guests in this quaint farming town outside of Kyoto. I've traveled to Japan several times & this was easily the best hosting I've ever experienced. We cooked together (Yuka san worked as a sous chef at a michelin star Japanese restaurant in Kyoto!! If you want to learn anything she's very happy to share), ate together, we laughed together, and had so much fun! Hideo knows every single person in this town, and has a ton of cool hobbies. (as do I so we got along fast). He's growing mushrooms, veggies, rice, riding motorcycles, and they even have a little cafe business. Hideo has special permission to show you ancient forests you'd never be able to see without him. They have 3 very friendly dogs that make you feel really at home. Their old style thatched roof house is full of charm and old Japanese character but at the same time has all the amenities you'd expect in a nice hotel. You have it all to yourself, they live in a house on the other side of the driveway next to the "cafe house" were you'll meet for amazing Japanese dinners or breakfast. They're also more than happy to let you just do your own thing but I think that would be a mistake, not getting to know these...
Read moreWe had a great time at Tokuheian! Hideo and Yukako are amazing hosts. They made sure our three night stay was unforgivable. We stayed here while attending the Minka Summit 2022 at Hanase, which is an easy 30 minute drive from here. The house is fully equipped with utensils and cookware if you wish to cook yourself, but there is no need. They prepared a delicious breakfast in the lovely cafe right outside the front door. For dinner we requested a nabe and they delivered it to hour house. We felt very welcome from the very beginning and simply enjoyed talking to them. Their two dogs are really friendly and love attention. The Bernese Mountain Dog with literally sit on your foot hoping for a scratch on the head. Unforgettable...
Read moreI highly recommend staying at Tokuheian. It is a lovely hatched inn with the most welcoming hosts. Hideo and Yukako made sure we felt comfortable and explained a lot of the local area to us. We were very happy with their hospitality.
In particular, we purchased the dinner and breakfast, which was some of the best I've had in Japan. Especially the hotpot with deer meat and the Tamago Kake Gohan! If you have the opportunity, I'd recommend both.
Another favourite highlight were his two dogs, Daizu and Meme whi were the cutest. If you're a dog lover, you'll adore them.
Enjoy the...
