We were eight adults staying at Sugi Chalet (the associated self contained lodge at Sugi) and had a fantastic two weeks in late Feb 2024. The lodge is very comfortable and warm, being a recently and very tastefully renovated traditional Japanese guest house with low height doorways and low height everything. The hosts Tayler and Neil were excellent communicators and did everything possible to ensure we had a great stay. The six upstairs bedrooms contained very comfortable beds with warm doonas and are well heated by gas which we turned off when sleeping but we were never cold. The three bathrooms have plenty of hot water; the two original style bathrooms with showers and plunge tubs on the ground floor can be a bit chilly,. Wash hand basins are in common areas on the bedroom floor, Japanese guesthouse style. There are four separate toilets and a fifth in the upstairs bathroom. The kitchen is a good commercial setup and we cooked every night when not enjoying pizza from Two Pines pizzeria; cooking utensils are adequate, just. The two lounge rooms are comfortable and one contains a large flat screen TV. The drying room in the entry foyer didn't really work but this is going to be rectified by 2025 winter apparently. The lodge is situated a couple of hundred metres above the Romance Chair loading point; you need to walk about 100m up a slight incline to access the ski run down to the chair which then gives access to the Suginohara gondola for some great skiing. Hiring a van provided by Sugi Chalet is highly recommended for getting around. Will definitely return again if we have a large group - a very enjoyable fortnight at Sugi Chalet - thank you...
Read moreWe have had the most fantastic 10 days at Sugi Chalet! We were a group of 13 and the lodge was absolutely perfect for us. There were enough bathrooms, very comfy bedrooms, plenty of break out spaces, the commercial kitchen was well equipped and everything we could need. Tayler, Neil and their teams went above and beyond for us - we hired our gear through them, had a private lesson with Neil, ate delicious pizzas (and had them delivered) at their Two Pines Pizza and they very kindly shuttled us to/from the train station.
The location is ski in and pretty much out, at the bottom of the locals chair at Sugi. We hired two vans for our stay which I would highly recommend - allows you to go to the supermarket, experience a range of dining options (can recommend Hotel Silverhorn in Akakura and Arakin Ramen in Ikenotaira Onsen resort), and travel to the other resorts including Akakura Onsen and Kanko which provided more unreal skiing.
Overall we had the best time - absolutely unbelievable snow and a fantastic stay with Escape Myoko - already planning our...
