HOTSPRING CURES! A visit to Tamagawa Onsen on the Hachimantai Plateau, one of the most famous in Japan,  is a must.  It is fed by a wellspring of 98-degree Celsius hot-spring water, and at a pH level of 1.1 and a discharge volume at 9,000 cubic meters per minute, it is has both the most acidic water and the highest discharge volume in Japan!

Next to the Tamagawa Onsen ryokan is a small trail to the spring gushing very hot stream. Visitors may closely observe gas fumaroles with yellow openings attributed to sulfur deposits along a nature trail.

Bedrock baths for those seeking hotspring cures especially for cancer are available as the area has a significant amount of radioactive radium. It is also famous for the discovery of hokutolite, a rare mineral containing radium.

Guests at Shin Tamagawa are offered a free shuttle service and entrance to Tamagawa Onsen Ryokan. We reserved a seat for the 12:30 pm-14:05 pm shuttle service. A special vehicle with triangular wheels to navigate there icy and snows covered roads was used to get us to Tamagawa Onsen Ryokan.

The spa area offers similar types of bath options to those in Shin Tamagawa. Shin Tamagawa's spa area is at least 10% bigger at 50 x 30 feet (~ 20 x 10 metres) with twelve baths.  Types of baths offered include steam baths, cascading baths, bedrock baths, and rotenburo, with different concentration of acidic waters. The 100% acidic hotspring water being the most popular with the Japanese guests. All baths are gender segregated, and friendly to the physically challenged.

There are also three family baths with different concentration of acidic waters, each measuring about 20 x 8 feet (~ 3 x 7 metres), which should be reserved with the front desk. Be forewarned that the acidic waters can be biting. Guests are advised to shower before and after a soak.

Guests can also partake in activities like table tennis, karaoke, and bingo (¥100). There is also a gymnasium with exercise machines and yoga mats. Reservations for use at the frontdesk. :p

Meals are buffet style, and vegetarian friendly. Many guests to the Onsen are here for the curative treatments offered by the hotspring waters, hence meats and sashimi are somewhat limited.

From Dec. 1, 2015 to Apr. 20, 2016, route 341 is closed. Take the route bus, about 60 minutes, from JR Tazawako Station to Shin Tamagawa Onsen. There are 4 buses daily. If unsure of your way, go to the Tazawako Tourist  Information Centre, tel: 0187 43 2111. The info centre is in the station itself and they will be able to guide you to the route bus stop and parking area, if you drive. Please follow the bus schedule. Fare per trip per person is ¥1440.

Take on the challenge of the intensely acidic hot springs at an inn where rooms are filled with the scent of Akita cedar.

The spring is famous for its rare spring quality, which is highly acidic and contains hydrochloric acid instead of sulfuric acid, and also contains radium. In addition to the 14 baths in the large bath made of Aomori cypress, which is resistant to acid, you can also bathe in the private bath. It is easier to use as a hot spring resort than the main building of Tamagawa Onsen, which is loved by hot spring visitors, and it also has specially designed rooms.

The hot spring here is highly acidic with a pH of 1.2! It has such a strong peeling power that it tingles the skin, so in addition to the 100% spring water, there are also baths with diluted water. Try the baths with lower concentrations of 1%, 30%, etc.

pH values are usually expressed as an index of 1 to 14, with anything below 7 being classified as acidic. Hot springs with high acidity (low pH value) are characterized by their strong sterilizing and keratin-dissolving powers. They can also be harsh on the skin, so don't forget to rinse out and moisturize...
