We went to Hotel Masyu with our family of four. The staff was able to communicate in English and Japanese and help us with the "nuances" of the Japanese onsen that were very helpful. And, though our kids now older (18,20) allowed them to truly appreciate so much more of our travel than other trips, they also wanted more. And, that they got. We so enjoyed the relaxing baths (women and men separated, in case you're worried about that). This was followed by an incredible dinner... in our rooms... together as a family... we could not have been more pleased - with the dinner and the time as a family. We had so much food, we couldn't finish it all (sorry!) The food was mostly locally sourced which made it even better. We learned about the delicacies of the area which was fun. After a very sound night of sleep, we woke up to another very nice breakfast and, of course, a great bath before we left. The manager of the hotel was even so kind to take us to our next location which we so greatly appreciated. We would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to experience an authentic Japanese ryokan and love it. Thank you,...

Read moreMy husband and I decided to celebrate our 2nd anniversary at Tsukioka Onsen in Shibata, Niigata.
We stayed at Mashu Hotel. The hotel is big and very well maintained. The staff are really nice and they welcome you to the hotel by picking you up from the parking lot, then they bring your luggage. Everything is well explained when you check in.
For the room, we had a twin room i think and i thought it was small when we booked it, but it’s not. It’s quite spacious and the amenities are available to use. The toilet and shower is clean, but still I won’t use the glasses in the room. Haha
You can reserve a private onsen for 45m i think, it will cost about 2000 yen. I had to rent because I have tattoos so, can’t really go in the public bath. Thumbs up for the private onsen.
