When I was making the reservation one month before, I've asked if they can prepare vegetarian meal for me, and they replied they can. However, they seem like haven't done any vegetarian meals before. There were fried pork, beef, and sashimi, in my dish. The manager felt very surprised when he knew I don't eat sashimi either. The only thing I could eat were half banana, a small piece of apple and orange. They tried to give me a plate of fried noodles, I don't know where it was from, but it looked like something left from lunch, anyway, there was still beef inside. Finally, I got a plain udon soup, no any vegetables and eggs, except some spring onion. I paid 3200yen for dinner, and this is what I had. The manager didn't come to say a word to me. I had a big day that day and really starving when I arrived. I was really looking forward to my dinner, but it became a tragedy. Next morning, I initially talked this issue with the manager, and eventually I got 2000yen refund, still without any apology from him. If I didn't talk to him, he would just let it be for sure. I felt like he thought it was not his business. About the room, it looked clean, but there was unknown liquid in the plate of my room. Originally, this should be my best day on Kumano Kodo, but turned out it's the worst. If you are a vegetarian/vegan and going to stay here, better to make sure all the details with them in advence, or send a recipe to them, seriously. I am extremely disppoint about this place. The extra one star is for the friendly staff, especially for the young lady who speaks English. Without her help, I may have nothing to eat that night. She is also the only person felt sorry to me even it's not...

This place used to be a school in the past, they managed to change their clasrooms into amazing tatami rooms! They offer you a yukata so you can use for dinner, if it gets too cold, you can pay 100 yen to turn on the heater, they have laundry machines and a very nice bath. I used it right after I arrived (13:00) and only shared it with one lady. There is no WiFi in any room but the living room and sometimes it doesn’t work. They clearly labeled my food with "vegan" but they served miso soup with fish :( But the rest of the dinner was good. Also If you're vegan, I reccomend you to bring vegan protein or buy some onigiris because breakfast is just salad and fruits for anyone with a plant based diet. This is the most difficult and demanding day of the hike, so luckily I had my emergency protein with me. Lunch box was okay. If you get there early, you can enjoy your afternoon on the field, where you can buy some coffee or beer. It was a great feeling walking out in the morning, ready to walk for the hardest day of the hike and having your staff playing the horn seashell for us. I felt powerful. Thank...

Amazing stay! This place is renovated from an elementary school, but I get to have my own Japanese room so cozy! So happy. They offer onsen free to use until 9pm, but it is boiling hot, maybe good for some people who likes it hot. It’s so clean, and so spacious, as only 10-12 rooms, and dinner, breakfast, bento, all super good, especially breakfast it’s half buffet style and you can eat until you make your lunch into it as well. And laundry and dryer, the dryer only ¥100 for 60mins! it’s too cheap to be true! And this is 2024! The only little disadvantage I would say 1) it requires ¥100 to switch on AC. 2) the wifi only works at lobby. 3) there is only one monitor shop nearby with limited choices. 4) need to check out by 9am but for most hiker they will be gone by 7:30. I would say best for value and best to stay in the middle of nowhere with such special place, please go and book now (at Kumano Travel website)

Charming inn converted from a school. As with many inns in Japan's small villages, it's nothing luxurious. But the clean, comfortable, spacious tatami room and the hot bath were heaven after a day of tough hike from Nachi Taisha. All the rooms face the river so you can hear the water all the time. The owner is very friendly & welcoming. The food is strictly Japanese and tasty. It included grilled ayu fish caught by the owner from the river behind the inn. We also ordered a boxed lunch for the next day's hike. Note that the toilet is shared (has Western style with washlets), so is the bath which is only available until 9 PM. Wifi is only at the lobby area, which has a small living room. Laundry is free, but dryer costs 100 yen. The AC in the room (with heating function) costs 100 yen for 2 hours. The futon was warm enough for us so we didn't need to use it.
