My experience was close enough. It would have been a pleasant trek with scenic views going from the Murodo bus interchange to this place. Yes, trekking is the only way to get there. The weather changed from patchy sunshine to drizzling when the building of this place was barely visible. As we stepped into the entrance, the rain had turned much heavier and it didn't improve a bit for the entire day.||||Although there wasn't much to do while getting stuck indoors, and not a lot of communal areas to mingle with others, the private tatami room we had was simple yet nice and comfortable.||||The viewing platform of Jigokudani was closed when we were there. The closest place to observe the sulphur spewing valley from a safe distance was the outdoor area of this property. And we could see the valley clearly from our room!||||The place was generally clean. But with the amount of guests it could accommodate, not surprising the shared toilets got a little dirtier towards the end of the day and the following morning.||||This is another place in Japan that the water from the tap is drinkable. Saves a lot of plastic bottles.||||Both dinner and breakfast were buffet style. The food was not bad considering how remote this place is.||||The onsen isn't fancy but is claimed to be the highest altitude one in Japan. Worth trying while you are there. Like many guesthouses with indoor onsens, that's also our...
Read moreI had the pleasure of staying in Mikurigaike Onsen (2 bed, western style) for 4d3n in July 2025. The location of the onsen was great, walking distance to Murodo Terminal and there are signs along the way to guide you there. Once you arrived at the onsen, you will be greeted by Mikuri Cafe and the lovely staff at the counter. The room may be basic as we only had the beds, but the service and food made up for it.
The half-board option with Mikurigaike onsen was great as we do not have to worry about food. And the set dinner surprised us for its variety, and it was sumptuous! The staff in onsen were thoughtful enough to provide us different options every evening, so we do not repeat the food. I noticed that we were eating different dishes from the rest of the tables (which we had already had them on our 1st night)
The onsen serves as a good base for hiking and respite for multi-day exploration. We enjoyed our stay as we hiked Mt Oyama and we aim to be back to explore Murodo and the other mountains again! Highly recommended to fellow hikers.
Thank you for the hospitality, staff from...
Read moreExtremely stunning place, really almost like Swizerland, with the plus of volcanic landscape and lovely lake and patches of snow even in summer! The hot spring has amazing waters, you instantly become smooth like marble. The rooms are shared but there are curtains in between for privacy and you have your own electric socket and small lamp. The dorms have 6 beds, 3 up 3 down. Bring own towel, they have shampoo. The dinner included in your room price is EXTREMELY DELICIOUS and very high class, never expected such gourmet stuff from a Mountain Hut without easy access. Breakfast also very nice and varied. The Ramen we purchased there for lunch with shrimp and pork meat was truly impressive, rich and delicious. All staff were wonderful and helpful. You can easily stroll around and enjoy the amazing views in all directions. This place is always beautiful in any season! Can't wait to go again and enjoy it in a...
