We decided to visit Oshima Island after visiting Ito/Atami. We arrived by jetfoil from Atami and continued onwards to Tokyo by jetfoil afterwards, which worked out well. ||||This hotel was a disappointment for us. Oshima is not a very touristy spot (by Western tourists anyway) in our impression, although there seemed to be many Japanese people at the hotel. ||||The hotel outdoor entry, lobby and common areas were not clean or well maintained, so our spacious and clean room was a pleasant surprise. ||||We were picked up by hotel shuttle from the port in the morning, and they kindly dropped us off at the volcano hiking trail immediately after pickup, taking our luggage onwards to the hotel. After hiking the volcano trail, we returned to the hotel in the afternoon, not having had lunch yet and still before official check in time. The hotel is quite isolated (best accessible by private car), with no restaurants anywhere near. The hotel restaurant was closed, so the only food available was vending machine (ie. chips and instant noodles). I'm not sure what people staying there for several days eat at lunchtime, perhaps they all arrive by car and venture into town. Anyway, we were made to wait in the lobby for a couple of hours until they let us into our room just a few doors away. Clearly, nothing had happened in the room while we waited, so this was bit odd to us. Additionally, when it was time to go to our room, the staff just pointed at our luggage which was stashed behind the checkin desk for us to carry up, rather than offering to help or putting it into our room beforehand as many other places we stayed in Japan did. ||||There was not much English spoken here so we made good use of our phrase book and tried our best to communicate our questions and needs, but we remained confused about some things, like the unstaffed gift shop in the lobby. ||||Dinner was interesting, we cooked our own tempura at the table in a little hot pot. We noticed however that dinner was set out at tables in the dining room at least an hour before official dinner time (6pm) started. This did not seem food-safe as fish and shellfish were sitting out at room temperature for some time. We were glad to be able to cook the selections thoroughly in the hot pot. ||||In our assessment, this hotel is not trying to cater to foreign tourists at all and wasn't a good fit for us. In fact, during dinner a few Japanese people approached us wondering what had brought us to Oshima. The draw for us was the volcano and that part of the visit was good. I would not stay here again. If we were to venture into a similar situation I would look at the other Tokyo islands, alternative accommodation or making it a day trip visit instead of an...

Read moreSeriously this hotel should be condemned. If there is such a thing as a Japan hotel association and they visitors this hotel they would have to shut it down. The level of neglect is not a recent phenomenon and I do not write this because I received bad service, actually the staff were as helpful as they could be, but the mis-management is so obvious that you would have to make an effort to run a hotel this far into disrepair. The communal areas are unclean dust everywhere the rooms smell of dust and dampness. The dining room fans and whole room looks like it hasn’t been cleaned since the opening day. The food was fresh enough and tasty enough but when was individual tempura and grilling at the table ever a good idea? They whole room was dense with smoke thanks to that genius idea. Also who would put a plastic box of stag beetles on display at reception? When was that ever an appealing first impression? I was willing to overlook a lot of things but when I entered the room and it smelt like a damp and depressing building site I had to go to reception and cancel my second night. Sorry but no this makes “Faulty Towers” look like a luxury hotel. Please do yourself a favour I think the local hotels are better they are friendly and simple but they care about you. At this place no one cares. I feel sorry for the staff, they must be depressed for they know that no one cares and they stopped caring too. So sad, but the 1980’s bubble era ended 30 years ago. This hotel needs to wake up and smell the coffee it’s to for a change. Otherwise they should shut it down, it’s a...
