Not only is this an onsen, but there is a cafe, resrtaurant, reading deck, market/gift shop, cabins, and multiple trails.||||We started by hiking a little bit to the onsen area, then went across the bridge and had a picnic down in the gorge on the rocks. Then we headed back to the onsen for some relaxation.||||Details:||||Onsen:||- Cost 800 yen for adults, 200 yen for children||- Small towel costs 200 yen, large one is 500-800 yen||- Separate facilities for women and men, and a private area that can be reserved||- Shampoo and soap provided||- There are indoor and outdoor baths, a dry sauna, and a cool down bath outside||||Cafe/Restaurant:||- Restaurant open for lunch and dinner, cafe open all day||- Cafe serves water, beer, juices, tea, and small snacks||- There is a nice balcony with about 20 lounge chairs you can lean back in and take a nap, read a book, etc. ||||Access:||- Large parking lot just outside the onsen||- Bikers and Hiker access as well||||The views from the onsen are amazing, it looks out across a river valley across to the side of a large mountain, there are no man made objects in sight (ie. no houses, cars, etc.)||||One last thing is the nice little "foot spa" area, it is outside and free, great after a long...

Read moreUnique onsen experience in the Akigawa valley. The bathhouse is situated on a small hilltop overlooking a stream below, surrounded by dense pine trees. Contrast this with neighboring Tsuru-tsuru Onsen, which is halfway up Mt Hinode and amid bamboo groves. The outdoor baths unfortunately are not covered by any shade so it can get quite roasty late morning to mid-day. An interesting nuance -- the first public bath I've been to (excluding fancy onsen hotels) where the showers do not use the "push-pedal/lever" gadget that turns off every 10s or so and you have to revert, here it's simply an on/off faucet like in regular bathrooms. Water was a tad hot for my liking, at 40-42. Can get a tad crowded as it's near a popular campsite and BBQ area.
