Visiting Maji Moto Eco Camp was truly something special – a perfect combination of genuine connection with nature, cultural richness, and sustainable tourism. Nestled on a hilltop deep in Masai lands and overlooking vast savannah plains, Maji Moto Eco Camp is a small, environmentally-sensitive retreat. Operated by Masai people from the nearby village of Maji Moto, a stay here immerses you not only in the breathtaking natural beauty of the Loita Hills but also in the ancient culture and wisdom of the Masai.
The camp is comfortable while blending seamlessly into the natural surroundings, creating a feeling of peace and harmony with nature. Water is brought to the camp from a nearby spring, where it surfaces at a temperature of 60°C.
One of the most special experiences was walking with the Masai. Together, we explored the surroundings, learned about medicinal plants and animal tracks, and listened to their stories and wisdom passed down through generations. A truly fascinating moment was when they demonstrated how to make fire without matches – using only natural materials and skills refined over centuries.
The safari trips were exceptionally well organized – we managed to see many animals, including the Big Five, all in a peaceful setting, far from tourist crowds. The food at the camp was delicious, fresh, and local, with a Slovenian touch, as the camp is owned by a Slovenian couple.
In the evenings, we enjoyed relaxing by the campfire under the star-filled African sky – an experience free of light pollution and full of timeless beauty.
I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a unique, culturally rich, and environmentally conscious African adventure. Maji Moto Eco Camp is not just a place to sleep – it’s an opportunity to connect more deeply with both nature and people.
To conclude, I’d like to mention that even with small children, I felt completely safe at night, knowing that Masai warriors, equipped with spears, were keeping watch. Although wild animals tend to stay away from the camp, this gave my wife extra peace of mind.
Even though the camp is in a remote location about 10 minutes from the village, there is internet access, so you can still send a message...
Read moreThis camp was one of the highlights of my amazing three week adventure in Kenya and Tanzania. I got so much out of the walking tour, learning all about Maasai life traditional and in the present day, inspecting plants and flowers and finding out what they are used for. We saw the village down below the ridge where the camp is situated, and saw the hot springs and the town's people and children going about their business there. Our guide demonstrated his prowess with his spear and answered all our questions. Later we had a fascinating time watching the singing and dancing. A campfire after dinner will always be an unforgettable memory from the trip, as village members explained their culture and traditions. The meals were terrific, fresh and satisfying. Our lodging in a tent with comfortable mattresses was my kind of camping, now that I am age 70! The outdoor bathrooms and showers were special, clean and functional. The hot water came from the village hot springs. One outhouse had a beautiful carved "chair" with a great view of the valley below. In fact all the structures were thoughtfully designed, built Masai-style using available materials such as branches, stalks, grass, cow-dung, mud and stone. As such they made sense in the landscape and were pleasing to look at and use. We were happy to stay in a place operated by Masai people from the nearby village, who gain economically from our stay with them at their...
