I arrived expecting great things from this well reviewed 'country lodge' on the outskirts of town.||||The hotel is pleasantly designed with a green(ish) environment. My room was adequately equipped - double bed with full mozzie net on rails, hot (solar heated) water, a desk (though no power point), and a free-standing fan (which was necessary as the room was poorly ventilated and hot). ||||But the staffing is really very poor. The young lady at reception was vague and slow, the service in the bar was non-existent and we spent 45 mins waiting for a cup of tea after asking 3 different people, then 2 hours waiting for dinner to be prepared. Simple rice and chicken curry. No vegetables. The kitchen is up some steps away from the bar/restaurant building, so the waiting staff are absent half the time as they run up and down. There was no change at the bar, no tonic water, no ice and luke warm beers (due to power cuts). Breakfast was very thin at 7.30 am. When we asked for some action the staff brought out a gas stove, some eggs to fry, bread slices, beans, jam, etc and it started to look better, but we had to leave at 7.45 am (which I wouldn't consider especially early as Kenyan office hours are from 8 am) so we were only able to take tea, a pineapple slice and a piece of bread then had to head out. On checkout we found an elderly lady and a young receptionist, neither of whom had change for payment, could really understand or explain the billing very clearly, and took (literally) 5 minutes to meticulously write out each receipt, one slow letter at a time. So we got away late and not off to the best start to our day.||||The hotel could be run by one very sharp person, rather than what appears to be an effort on the owner's part to employ 6 or 7 people who operate at half speed and lack any sense of efficiency or customer service.||||In summary, a well built property in a good location with great potential, but let down by slow, amateurish staff with no sense of the importance of the...
Read moreSpent 8 days at the Migori Country Lodge during the last week of July. Good time for a North American to go because it's their winter. Perfect mid 70's temperatures every day.||||The amenities are really nice for what you get in Africa. It may not be up to North American standards but it is still very comfortable. Clean. Maybe not up to my standards but it exceeds their standards enough that I was very comfortable.||||The grounds are really nice too. Gated and secure. It is obvious that a lot has been invested in making this place very nice.||||Dan, the owner, is a great host. All the staff are really friendly and worked hard to make us comfortable.||||If I ever go back I'll be staying at the Migori...
Read moreThis is one of the Lodges that I have seen grow over the years. I first interacted with the owner when he was just starting out, he had just planted his trees and you could see the tress from the main Migori- Isebania highway. Fast forward almost 10 yrs later, the place is well hidden by a beautiful landscape, more rooms built, hot shower and a vision almost achieved. I love this place and why you may ask, you feel at home, for a moment there you forget that you are in a hotel far away from home. The staff are friendly and meals excellent. Of course when around I always eat the Lake Victoria fish with some local veggies and nshima/ ugali 😋😋
Looking forward to my next visit...and...
