When you enter the spacious lobby of Freelander hostel, one of the first things you might notice is a speech-bubble-shaped sign on the reception desk declaring "I'm in the best hostel in Central Asia". The hostel is new, in a purpose-built building, on the edge of what might be considered the heart of Bishkek. Some may think it a little too far from the action, but you will find that it is but a pleasant stroll down to Chui Avenue along one of Bishkek's delightful broad green boulevards. It is also sited right next to the railway line, so you will see and hear occasional trains rumbling by, during the day or night.||||The staff are fantastic, and between them speak English and German, as well as Russian and Kyrgyz. Management seem keen to elicit ideas about where they can improve. My impression was that the hostel is well designed, and everything seems to have been well thought out and solidly constructed. You have a large kitchen and dining area, and common space for work or relaxation spread across two floors. During the time I was there, the place felt vast and uncrowded, but it was not yet full to capacity. The dorms are spacious, beds have deep, comfortable mattresses, and each is equipped with a light and power point. Aircon, heater, and opening window with flyscreen may make your stay more comfortable. Washroom and showers are equally well designed and constructed. (Note to fellow travellers: When using the WC, please erase the vestiges of your business, thus ensuring a more pleasant experience for the next visitor. Hint: A toilet brush is provided in each cubicle.)||||Is this the best hostel in Central Asia? In this traveller's assessment, it...
Read moreI came here for a solid internet connection for a full day of zoom/webinar, and the internet was excellent. Besides this however, I felt let down with the general service. Simple things went wrong.
When I arrived at this accommodation they told me my double room wasn’t available - maybe they double booked the room, but didn’t warn me about this at all in advance. They offered a single instead, and asked me to cancel my booking to do this - I did so, but they then didn’t ask me to make a new booking. Frankly, I’m wondering if they got me to cancel just so they could charge the same price for the room but then not need to pay booking.com anything?
They refused to offer me the lower price of a single room, and instead just insisted they give me breakfast for free. I eventually got this changed to laundry and a coffee included, but overall as above, odd behaviour and pretty poor hospitality. Felt like they were just trying to get as much money as possible out of me.
The double room not being available was not my fault - so don’t put it on the customer to still pay more! Shitty way to deal with a customer.
Separately, the rule is for quiet from around 11pm-8am I think, but they do nothing if people are actually loud at these hours. I got woken up at around 00:00 by some guests in the other single/double rooms screaming and shouting in the corridor, despite having earplugs in.
There is zero point having a rule for quiet between 11pm-8am if it is...
Read moreBy far the best hostel I have ever stayed in. I travel a lot throughout Europe but never expected that level of sophistication in Central Asia. While in Europe most hostels are used to tourists and don’t always feel the need to perform, this hostel surprised me on my first ever visit to the region through professionalism of the staff at all times, superb cleanliness and order, strong support of an open atmosphere, very cool events like professional networking, sports, cultural or other social events. I always felt like a family had taken me in and lovingly supported me on my way. On my first evening I was invited to a birthday celebration and by the second day I knew everybody in the house and we all had dinners together ever since. I always test the venue for a couple of days before I decide to stay long term. I ended up staying for the whole month of my mission in Bishkek. Dear Daniar and team, I wish you all the best with your plans on further developing a digital nomad hub and coworking Center in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and all of Central Asia. You are doing great already and I hope I will return to your beautiful country and...
