We stayed here recently and had a mixed experience. Positives: The resort is only about an hour from the airport by speedboat, and transfer timings are flexible, which is really convenient. The island itself is beautiful — very natural, filled with trees, and has that calm old-Maldives vibe since it’s one of the oldest resorts. Interiors are a bit dated. We were on the all-inclusive package, which included non-motorized water sports (kayak, snorkeling gear, etc.) and activities like sunset cruising and catamaran rides. The sea was absolutely stunning — crystal clear and blue. Drinks were unlimited and good quality (though you can’t take them out of the bar, which felt a little odd). Food was okay — breakfast and lunch were buffet style, dinner was à la carte. Could use more variety, but overall decent. The restaurant host, Milon, went out of his way to make us feel welcome with his warm smile, friendly conversation, and attentive service. Thank you, Milon. The room itself was lovely, but the bathroom was disappointing. The Muslim shower was placed far from the toilet seat, so it couldn’t be reached, there was a strange smell, only one showerhead, and the tap was old and rusty. Negatives: Unfortunately, the service let us down. Our very first impression wasn’t great — the resort rep scolded us for being “late” for the boat, even though we arrived at 7:15 for a 7:30 departure. Another guest mentioned the same experience. Not the welcome you’d hope for. We were also very disappointed about being denied snorkeling equipment. We explained that we can swim and snorkel (we do it often), signed the consent form, and even said we’d stay close to shore, but were still refused saying we initially mentioned we are not “pros” at swimming. This has never happened at any other resort we’ve stayed at. At check-in, the host didn’t know we were on the all-inclusive package and started explaining full board until we corrected her. Later, we were charged for sparkling water in the minibar, even though the host told us everything except alcohol was included. When we flagged it, we were told it was on the minibar menu — but since we were told otherwise, we didn’t think to double-check. Overall:
The island is gorgeous and the location is convenient, but poor communication and disappointing service affected our stay. With better hospitality, this could be a fantastic resort, but as it stands, I wouldn’t return.

Makunudu Island Resort is an absolute paradise, especially for those looking for an affordable escape to the Maldives without compromising on quality or experience. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality from the staff – their friendliness and attentiveness made us feel right at home throughout our stay. One of the highlights was the food – every meal was a delight. The variety was impressive, with both international and local Maldivian dishes available, all prepared with care and fresh ingredients. Whether it was breakfast by the beach or a romantic dinner under the stars, the dining experience exceeded our expectations. Our room was incredibly spacious, clean, and tastefully decorated in a rustic island style that added to the charm. The semi-outdoor bathroom was a unique and luxurious touch, and waking up just steps from the beach every morning was a dream come true. What truly sets Makunudu apart is its balance of comfort, beauty, and affordability. It’s a rare find in the Maldives – a resort that delivers an authentic island experience, delicious food, spacious accommodations, and five-star service without the hefty price tag. Thanks to FC Mr. Chandana and our waiter Mr. Lasantha for helping us to make the stay comfortable

It's an amazing place to spend your holidays peacefully. The staff here are very friendly. I would like to mention Anwar who was at the restaurant. He was friendly. Food was amazing. Especially their Maldivian night on Friday. Being a non swimmer I had an amazing experience snorkeling. KD at the sports center was so good even if you are non swimmer. You can definitely trust him in the water. Not sure the experience is same for non Indians. But had very bad experience with scuba diving. The instructor was very rude and practically won't help at all no matter even if you're drowning. Because of her behaviour I felt unsafe and had to give up ,but she charged 135 USD even though I skipped. My husband tried with her and practically she wasn't showing anything. You can a lot more in snorkeling.scuba here is waste of money and time. Diving instructor is very bad. So if you're an Indian avoid scuba it's just waste of time. We were charged 270 for nothing. Expect scuba it's wonderful island and other people are very friendly. Every night they do shark feeding. There are plenty of sharks that comes at that time.

We took a weekend break to a resort we had been looking forward to visiting for a while. Makunudu located on the west side of North Male Atoll, 50 minutes by speedboat from the airport. With 38 land based villas, set amongst natural vegetation and surrounded by a noteworthy house reef it is one to consider if you are looking for a relaxed, peaceful holiday where you are happy to chill, read, snorkel or watch the world go by. It's a no shoes island with soft sandy paths, winding through tropical undergrowth and palm trees, although parts of the beach are a little more coarse than others.

The individual villas are more spacious than they appear from the outside and have high ceilings,  open air bathrooms, and are equipped with the usual amenities - mini bar, toiletries, hairdryer, beach towels, tea/coffee making facilities and WIFI connection. The only downside for me was each room was only provided 2 small bottles of water and unfortunately they are still using plastic bottles. Most villas are a few short steps from the beach, others like Embudu have a step down over a protective wall. For those looking to bask in the sun you will need to take your sun lounger away from the villa where they are positioned in the shade and onto the beach.

The buffet restaurant and bar, which also has a decking area, both sit together alongside the reception and souvenir shop to the right of the arrival jetty. The bar serves as the entertainment area with weekly Bodu Beru and  unfortunately a karaoke night! Sundowners are also served on the beach area in front of reception. Breakfast and lunch were served as a buffet and dinner as a set menu with starter, entree and a choice of main and desserts. All very good and nicely presented.

There is an established dive base although this would not necessarily be an area I would personally recommend for avid divers. For snorkelers however the house reef will keep you occupied. There is new coral growth evident, anemones filled with clown fish, plenty of fish life, turtles ( I encountered three just on one snorkeling session), black tips, moray eels and I am sure plenty more to encounter. It is possible to snorkel all the way around the island although I did not do so! Snorkeling equipment is free of charge and collected from the dive centre along with SUPs and kayaks for the more energetic!

There is a two treatment room spa, with an hours massage for $75 and as with many spas late afternoon/early evening was their busiest period.

The resort is favoured by Europeans and has a strong repeater base. At the time of my visit a mix of Italians, Germans and French.

It's a little gem of a resort and offers the original 'no shoes no news" atmosphere and environment that in my opinion truly reflects the Maldives. Our only criticism is that they were tipping food waste off the jetty to attract nurse sharks on a nightly basis. Hopefully an activity that will be reviewed as not really in keeping with their otherwise...
