I’ve been really hesitant to write this review for our stay in October because I wanted to LOVE Ojo Azul, but all and all the experience fell short.

First, why I wanted to love it: The grounds are beautiful, including the stunning vineyard surrounded by casitas and the relaxing pool area. The architecture of the restaurant was nice, and the band was great! Parking was easy, and the hotel felt very secure. Also, we had to depart a day early, and they offered for us to have that room credit for a future stay (great customer service!)

Our room was big and nice, but this bring me to my major issue: THE SEWAGE SMELL. When we first arrived to our room, I smelled light sewage, but was still so taken aback by the beauty of the hotel I attributed it to something outside the resort. We went out for the day and came back in the evening to have dinner at the restaurant. The food looked great, but I was unable to eat because of a now overwhelming sewage smell. I actually left my husband at the restaurant alone because it felt unbearable to me in the food setting, only to return to my room to notice it was inescapable. (In the morning the sewage smell was less noticeable, and the food was very good) This left me feeling very uncomfortable and nauseated. I hopped on Google reviews to see if others had experienced this, and I found this sewage mentioned by many others- I wish I had known.

A side issue was the massage: we booked the 45 minute massage. The massage was more like a lotion rub vs an actual massage; however, my issue was that when my husband and I got up after the massage the time was only 38 minutes past our start time. I didn’t appreciate being shorted over 15% of the total massage time.

Finally, the front desk booked our taxi to the wrong place, despite my efforts to explains that just using the restaurant name apparently doesn’t work in google maps so to use coordinates instead. After an hour of trying to direct the driver in the dark, we arrived at our destination that should have only been a 10 minute drive. I won’t deduct stars for that though, as I appreciate her booking for us, I understand there’s a language barrier, and perhaps the driver ultimately made the mistake.

In summary, the hotel is very alluring, and the restaurant staff are friendly. My husband said, “Honestly, for the location and price, I would have ignored everything else and said five stars if it wasn’t for the [poop] smell.” Hopefully we can return when the sewage issue is fixed, or at least have a room on the other side of...

My husband and I just stayed here for our honeymoon expecting at least a decent resort experience and we received just the opposite. The place is little off the beaten path and is pretty small. When we arrived in the evening we were told upon check in that there are no outside food or drinks permitted at the resort and that if we wanted to drink we had to run to their bar and order quickly (it was 7:55) because the restaurant closes at 8. WOW. What angered me the most about this situation is that you will not find this information listed anywhere on the Hotels.com listing. We tried to work with this unfortunate setback and decided to order two drinks each and jump in the jacuzzi that closes at 10. When we arrived in our bathing suits at 9 pm there was caution tape around the jacuzzi and it was closed. So basically every romantic amenity was unavailable upon arrival. May I mention that there are also no tubs in the rooms. The last straw was the next day. We had booked a local certified mobile massage that would come to our room and help us relax since the resort options had proven to be limited. They'd been there before and according to the guest services rules there was no policy against this. We received a phone call from management refusing to allow them access because the resort had just begun spa services. NOWHERE WERE THE RESORTS SPA SERVICES LISTED ONLINE UPON US BOOKING OR I WOULD HAVE BOOKED! So my husband literally argued about everything we’d be through since we started our stay at this joke of a “resort”. The manager replied that their jacuzzi was open the night before and persisted to tell my husband that we were mistaken... basically that we were lying. That’s the customer service we received. No, “we’re so sorry about these interruptions you’ve experienced”, her reply verbatim was “Well what do you want me to do about it?”. I’m not going to name call but it is clear that this place hasn’t established any professionalism and needs major help. It seems the pandemic hurt them and they’re really pinching for pennies with their guests. I regret not book at El Cielo. Don’t go through what we went...

For anybody that is planning a wedding or an event this is the place to do it at. My husband and I had three events here at Ojo Azul Resort. We had our 10 year anniversary dinner, Barbeque by the pool, and a brunch buffet style at the new glam room they built on property for all the girls to get ready in. This was all possible by the event team on property who are Raul Moreno and Evelin Reyna. They were hands down the best team to work with, they listened to the ideas I had and what I envisioned for all three events. This team was able to get the decoration I wanted and also provide the connections for music. I can truly say that this team will get it done and will make any event magical. Thank you Raul and Evelin, please know I will be back for future events. Also the staff on property, they will go above and beyond for you. Karina was the person that was taking care of all of our reservations for all our family and friends and made sure all my guests were able to stay on property. (THANK YOU KARINA) The restaurant staff at Almatierra who are Thomas, Xochi, Salvador, Pablo and anybody that went above to help on these events I want to Thank you. My family is impressed with the service and with the hospitality you have provided for us over the course of our stay. This review was honestly to say Thank you for making these days actually fun and stress free. I believe this place deserves to be recognized because it has such great top service and a dream team that LISTENS to your ideas in making a special time beautiful. Thank you Ojo Azul Resort and Almatierra Team Also The band on property we were able to hire them to stay longer for our anniversary dinner .....Please check them out. Also if you need anybody to travel to do makeup and hair @makeupbysandrah -Sandra Hernandez and @hairbyelenn -Elenn were amazing @josuemichelphotography- Josue Michel -look at how amazing...

Our third visit 09/2026: this time with another couple. Everything as usual was great. Staff even remembered us. Live music in the evenings. Love the fresh fruit, yogurt and home made granola that is included for breakfast. There is also a big menu if you want more. Beds are huge (king room) and super comfortable. Update 8/2024: We stayed at the resort after having dined there a year ago. Comfortable, clean casita. Roadway had been paved since last year so only 1 km on unpaved but well maintained dirt road (if you travel to Valle you know that many of the side roads can be very bumpy) so easy to get to off the Principal road in Francisco Zarco. We were there mid-week so not crowded. On weekends they have live music in the evening. Continental breakfast included - fresh fruit with house-made yogurt and granola. Other items available a la carts. Pool area very nice. Groom advantage of a spa offer for mini facial and massage combo which were very good and good value ~$100). Couldn’t have had more hospitable service (shout outs: Xochi, Pablo, Jose Luis, Esmeralda, Enrique). We dined and had a tour of the resort. Only 30 rooms - all modern, clean, comfy - some have outdoor firepits. All have relaxing view of vineyards and lovely restaurant. It’s off one of the unpaved roads. Staff was super nice.
