This is not a hotel. Casa de Colores, contrary to the positive reviews I had read, failed to meet my expectations. I had anticipated a knowledgeable individual to guide me as I explored a new city, but instead, I was met with solitude and an oddly designed house with multiple guest rooms. There is no 24-hour front desk. Well, the front desk exists there are simply no employees here. The only way to get help is through WhatsApp and the response times can vary greatly. ||Upon arrival, I discovered that Casa de Colores lacked staff, leaving me with no assistance or helpful advice. The establishment failed to fulfill the expectations set forth in the TripAdvisor reviews, resulting in an experience of solitude.||One of the primary reasons for my choice of accommodation was the renowned breakfast, but upon inquiring, I was informed that it had ceased to be offered. This revelation would have been beneficial if it had been known prior to booking. Another couple who stayed next door in the Frida Kahlo room also had booked here primarily for this breakfast. ||Moving on to my room, the Diego Rivera room, I found it charming and peculiar. I had paid an additional fee for a terrace, expecting it to provide access to the outdoors, but instead, it opened into the house, providing a wonderful view of the living room downstairs. This enclosed space, closed off to the elements, deviated significantly from my expectations. It also offered very little air circulation and resulted in a much warmer room despite the relatively cool outside temps. ||On the opposite end of the room, a window, similar to the terrace, led to the staircase, and a few feet away, another window to the outside. Consequently, the room experienced limited air circulation throughout the house, particularly on both ends. Despite the fact that it was relatively chilly at night the room remained quite warm due to the lack of circulation. ||The restroom facilities at this establishment are quite basic. The bathroom has a small, unlidded trash can specifically designed for toilet paper waste disposal. However, since there’s no staff, staying there for an extended period, like seven days, might be difficult. I reached out to the establishment to inquire about alternative disposal options, and they did help me empty the trash can once. But I wasn’t going to reach out every day and so I dealt with a very stinky trash can for the bulk of my stay.||On the positive side, the location is fantastic. The rooftop deck offers breathtaking views, and Centro is conveniently accessible by foot. While the location may involve some hill climbing, exploring the narrow alleys adds to the charm of Guanajuato. ||I paid a premium falsely thinking this was an actual hotel with staff and a daily breakfast. To put this in perspective I stayed at a much nicer, better equipped Air BnB in San Miguel for half the price and a much nicer stay. One can read in their guest book that just a year ago there was staff and a breakfast offered. But that has radically changed for the worse while the prices remain unchanged. I wasn’t the only guest who felt like this was not what we paid for. I would not...
Read moreWe are a family of 4 who spent a night here. We were amazed by everything! We love to travel and so we have been to lots of hotels and I would like to say that Casa Colores is everything any traveller could wish for.
It is beautifully decorated. Charming rooms with lots of thought put into them. My children loved the breakfast- eggs, frijoles, fruit, yoghurt , fruit juice. The room was huge! With lots of appliances- fully functional kitchen. Kettle, cooker, pots pans plates etc. Everything was available which I really appreciated as I love to have a cup of tea first thing in the morning.
The panorama was fantastic. Staff were helpful kind with a smile on their face. We loved it so much we want to be back already!
Things I would like to mention to help other travelers Breakfast is at 10.00-12.00
There is one table that seats 4 people. Your breakfast is made fresh to order. Only 4 people can eat at one time so naturally you will need to wait for your turn to be served.
But It is not an issue. Patience can solve this matter ;)
Location- parking is super challenging near the hotel as it is in an elevated area with tiny narrow alleyways/ streets.
We learnt it the hard way- we had to reverse in a tiny street and eventually find a new spot to park…
so I would like to save you time and energy.
Park at the ‘lower’ level streets and then you can walk to the hotel. It is part of the adventure. The hotel is kind of tucked away and not suitable for parking...
Read moreCasa de Colores is a lovely private guesthouse in Guanajuato, Mexico. At a comfortable distance from the lively center, the place is accessible from the Panoramica (via taxi), with an easy walk down to the city. The occasion for my visit was a special Foodie Extravaganza evening, with a tasting menu presented by visiting chef Samantha and front of house / maître d' José Miguel from Santo Huacal Restaurant in Patzcuaro (a very nice meal). I was keen to visit Casa De Colores, because rumor had it that the place is stunning. Well, it is! Walking into the hotel, there is a cozy bar to welcome visitors, leading into a comfortable lounge/dining area. Guests will note that the building has been decorated to a high standard, with great exuberance. Each room is different, themed with beautiful colors and all bedrooms have a private bathroom fitted to US/European standards. The rooms are filled with gorgeous tiles and handmade craft pieces, many of which are both beautiful and humorous … so lots to look at whilst dallying over a drink or snack. Climb the spiral staircase for a spectacular view from the terrace of colorful houses, the rugged hills that rise high above, and the glorious...
