This was without a doubt the most incredible place we have ever stayed. After travelling Mexico for two months, we stayed here for our anniversary. Upon arrival we were greeted with smiles and a complimentary drink. We were shown to our room with a partial lake view. We think it is worth spending the little extra to have the view of the lagoon as it is truly beautiful. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the AC worked very well. The bath on the balcony was a real luxury too! As it was our anniversary the staff very kindly gifted us a bottle of sparkling wine and beautiful berries and chocolates. The views from the terrace were outstanding and it was wonderful to watch the sunrise from here. It was also amazing to have the palapa where the staff very kindly set up a table for us to have dinner one night (you will need to make a reservation). During the daytime this is lovely to relax on with a book and take an occasional dive straight into the lagoon. Otherwise, both swimming pools were great to take a dip in to cool down. The hotel is incredibly clean and everything is very well maintained. Each day the bedroom was cleaned and we were given more water and coffee pods for the machine. It feels very modern yet has a welcoming, warm, boutique atmosphere. The food was definitely one of the highlights - we ate like a king and queen each day! We ate in our room the first night which was a real treat! The short rib tacos were a particular highlight, as was the rib eye steak. We wish we could have eaten everything on the menu as Chef Luis and Victor have an amazing talent. Their food was some of the best we have ever eaten! The location of the hotel is just outside of Bacalar. This means you need to drive or get a taxi into town, but the staff very kindly helped us order a taxi if we needed to. However, we thought the hotel’s location was amazing as it was so quiet and peaceful. The hotel also has everything you need and the best food in town so it is best to stay here. The highlight of the hotel was the staff - each person was incredibly talented, kind, friendly, and helpful. They simply could not do enough for you, and were always willing to answer questions or have a chat. They are a real asset to the hotel and made our trip unforgettable. If you have the opportunity to stay here, take it! You will not want to leave...
Read moreWe stayed here for 3 nights at the end of our Mexico holiday, and honestly I wish we stayed much longer. This hotel is amazing, a great value for such a stunning location. A room with the view is a must. We stayed at the top room on the lagoon (there is a top and bottom one right by the water). I’m glad we made a choice to stay at the top one, as it offers an amazing view of the water but much more privacy than the room below. The room was quiet, very big and bright. The food here was great! We had breakfast every day and lunch multiple times. The portions are huge (especially if you’re used to European portion size). We ended up ordering too much food each time. Short rib tacos were amazing. Breakfast portions are huge too. The hotel is located a bit outside of Bacalar, but taxi is reasonably priced - 50 pesos (£2) during the day, 70 pesos (£3) at night and to ADO station. The staff at the hotel are all polite and helpful. They deliver room service at no extra charge and are always there to help.
Slight improvements that could be made:
There is no mini fridge in the room to keep your water cold. Slight mishaps with room cleaning - the cleaning lady started cleaning during our breakfast at 8:30 (which we had in pergola, so we didn’t see her go in). We needed to get dressed for the boat trip, so we asked her to come back in 40mins. We were out for 6 hours, came back to the hotel after 3pm and our room hasn’t been finished, with windows fully opened, which as the result let in some bugs. That’s a small mishap, which was a bit unpleasant at the time, but didn’t impact the whole experience. Also, the palapa on the lagoon is quite small with 2 sun beds. Some guests put their belongings on the beds to “reserve” and then leave for hours. With such a small space this type of behaviour shouldn’t be encouraged.
Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel and will come back again next time...
Read moreIncredible!! I wish I could give a much higher score than just 5 stars! Everything about this hotel was perfect. Accommodations: there are only 14 rooms and each is decorated very “boutique” like, clean designs, very tasteful and the hotel was only 3 months. Each room has a patio with a table and your very own bath tub! So cool! The view from the pool terrace is spectacular. There is even a covered area on the lagoon that you can hang around - there is even a hammock. Very well designed to make you feel like you are a mini jungle then the view of the lagoon is awesome. Service: everyone was so attentive, but in a quiet and mild way. People weren’t constantly bothering you or completely ignoring you, like in Cancun. All of the staff members were so friendly. Food: I have to say, this was the best part of my stay. When I first saw that the dining area only had two tables, immediately dreaded the long line for breakfast, dinner etc. however, it turns out that the guests are actually encouraged to eat in their rooms or patio! They are happy, with no extra charge, to bring the food to your room. And room service includes the full menu! The pulpo was the best I have ever had in my life. Victor, the chef, explained the five step process which resulted in the inside being soft but the outside being slightly crunchy, by basting with butter in the oven. Luis, souf chef , was awesome with breakfast and loved using the herb smoker! They were so knowledgeable about the local foods. Finding Puerta del Cielo was a complete accident. But now I have found a new secret, favorite place to visit! Next time, I’m bringing my wife. Thank you Victor,...
