We recently had a one night stay in Tlaxcala. The hotel we usually stay at was booked out because of a sports event in the city so we decided to try Hotel Maria Bonita. THE GOOD We chose this hotel because of the price. At less than 700 pesos for a night it was very good value for money. It is a relatively new hotel and while it is located a bit further away from the main downtown area this wasn't an issue. It's only a casual 15 minute walk. In fact, we encountered more interesting shops and places to eat during the walk than in the main zócalo (most of the zócalo restaurants are quite expensive so it was great to find cheaper places to eat during our walk). By Didi, it is only 32-26 pesos to get downtown. Our room had a King size bed and was a comfortable size. The bathroom, like many, was quite cramped (I'll never understand why they don't put the toilet on a 45 degree angle instead of cramming it in along one wall!). It was clean and there were no bad smells. The water pressure in the shower was excellent with the hot water starting almost instantly. The room had a small wooden coffee table and chair but for the most part was quite spartan (no closet or shelves and minimal decor). One of the nicest things we enjoyed in this hotel was the friendly staff. They were some of the nicest people we have ever interacted with in a hotel! The room only had one shower towel but within a couple of minutes of asking they'd already given us another (curiously, there were no hand towels or floor mat for the shower). Upstairs, above the reception area is a free tea and coffee bar so you can make a hot drink or refill your water bottles. In the surrounding area there are no OXXOs or Tres Bs but there are several small tiendas and street food places, all very good value for money. THE BAD These days I have learned to travel with an extension cord, a multiboard for connecting electronic devices, and a wifi range extender (repeater). In this hotel we needed all of them. There was only one wall socket for guest use. During the day the wifi was good, especially accessing it through my range extender. Things were so good at the change over to the night receptionist. The moment he took over that was the end of internet until after midnight. We asked him if there was a problem with the internet and he promised to come and check but he didn't, of course; he was too busy streaming HD Netflix movies killing the internet for everyone else. It was impossible to connect to the internet in the evening and the signal strength dropped off so much that the wifi network was not even visible. So neither of us were able to do any work at night. THE UGLY It's very rare I ever mention anything in this section but this time there is something that is notable. Most of the "furniture" in the room is "bricked in" and tiled over, including the bed base. Unfortunately, the headboard of the bed is so badly designed it is a potentially fatal accident waiting to happen. At exactly the same height as the bed's pillows is a 90 degree corner that has been tiled over. Initially, the pillows covered it and I remember that when I discovered it I thought if someone jumped on the bed carelessly they split their skull in half on that edge. It really is that badly designed and should be removed. CLOSING COMMENTS The ultimate test of whether we liked a hotel is whether we'd stay there again. We both enjoyed our stay in this hotel but the internet problems at night and the lack of interest from the man at reception were very frustrating. We both needed to work with internet access. I think we'd be happy to stay again but probably only for a single night because we really need internet access at night.
