Can’t recommend this place enough! Abdul (the owner) runs a wonderful hostel. I decided to do the surf package for 6 ish days and EVERYTHING was taken care of for me. Boards were loaded for us, scouting and transportation were worked out, every single meal (including afternoon tea) was prepared for us, wetsuits and laundry washed and dried, etc etc etc. I didn’t have to lift a finger, got to surf (and eat) my heart out, made many friends, and got some awesome photos and videos of it all! Most people in the hostel were in for the same deal, so we did all of it together and got to know each other pretty well. The environment was incredibly supportive and trusting- more so than any other hostel i’ve ever stayed in. Down time was spent in each others company playing darts, ping pong, card games, etc. The surf coaches were also incredibly supportive and helpful out in the water. ADDITIONALLY- they took us to some other local spots for little half day trips as part of our daily excursions to surf. Also- if you wanted any extra surf sessions you can simply grab a board and walk to the ocean right out front. Alternatively if you wanted to opt out of any activities, you could simply remove your name from the white board and find your own adventure!
When researching where to stay in this stretch of the coast, I found Taghazout to be higher recommended than Tamrhakht and cooler looking in photos. I read that Taghazout was a surf and skate mecca and seemed to have better views as it sits on the coastal side of the highway. After visiting, I’m so glad to have found sunset surf in Tamrhakht! For me, the experience was primarily about surfing and hanging out with hostel mates. Tamrhakht has perfectly enough to do just that- a pharmacy, supermarket, and moroccan restaurant (La Petit Kawa) nearby for any auxiliary needs. I found Taghazout to be a bit more touristed and much more crowded- as cute of a town as it is.
ONE MORE THING- so many of the people I met were returners to the hostel- which is always a green flag for me. I pulled a photo book from the bookshelf of someone’s family trip to the hostel in 2010 and happened to meet that same couple less than 10 minutes later! I learned they come every year, as do many other regulars. It’s truly a wonderful community...
Read moreReally nice hostel with great food - very dissapointing surf camp
The hostel itself is so cosy, the common areas are amazing and including a huge roof top terasse. Food is provided and it is homemade and delicious. The chefs are really kind and helpful, I eat vegan and they put a big effort into adapting. Thank you very much for that ☺️ I would definetely recommend going there just to stay at the hostel, it is one of the most cosy hostels I have ever been to 😃
I was staying at the hostel as a part of a surf camp that they provide, that was however sadly a mostly negative experience. The coaches seemed frustrated, rude and impatient most of the time and preferred to drive to the same nearest beach instead of checking out where the best waves were, wich was promised in the surf camp description. I was the only intermidiate at that point and had therefore basically private lessons, but the coach didnt even seem to care about my experience. For instance after being my private instructor for 3 days he still didnt know if I was surfing as right- or lefthanded. He expressed that he was frustrated that I one day wished to go to another beach with bigger waves because then he would have to keep track on where I was wich was stressfull for him (and the job of a coach?). He said the beach was safe, not dangerous, just bigger waves. I could go on.. He often took waves himself and was gone for a long time. He was talking bad about one of the other surfers from the camp behind the persons back. I tried to talk with the owner of the camp but the behaviour of the instructors didnt change. I decided to moove even though it was stressful with just 3 days to go and many places booked out.
I came to Marocco to surf, only had one week, and was therefore very sad that the camp I prioritised to spent money on didnt provide me with the help to find the best waves in the area and to feel safe in them and have fun with the instructors.
I hope this complaint will result in improvement so that others will have a better surf camp at Sunset Surf House. But I would honestly recommend trying another camp in the nearest future 🌊 Have nice...
Read moreSpent 6 days at sunset house and had a great time. Everyone who works there is so great. hostel is clean, safe, and very comfortable. Since everyone is the hostel does most things together: meals, activities and surfing, the hostel feels very community oriented. Most comfortable I have felt in a hostel. Lot of common room areas to relax which I appreciated. Many people stay for multiple days/a week so you build good relationships with everyone and get comfortable with each other. food is amazing! Great variety location great. Short walk from the beach and right next to an amazing restaurant La petit kawa. The surrounding area feels very safe and the locals were very kind. surfing is wonderful. Really improved my skills while there. You do get out what you put in. If you ask questions and for feedback the instructors are very helpful. Most of the group is beginner to beginner/intermediate. If you are more advanced you can speak with Abdul to opt in and out of activities to customize the surf time to your level/liking, which my group really appreciated since we had a wide range of levels in our group. Abdul the owner works hard to make sure everyone has a great experience. He will organize shuttles if you need to leave an event early, you can take boards and wetsuits out whenever you want, he regularly checks in to make sure everyone is having a good time and see what he can do to improve the experience.
Encountered many people who come here who are returners, and I...
