Two things stood out here... the staff were absolutely lovely and very helpful and the rooftop bar is sensational! Other than that we felt it’s a solid 3 star hotel - reminiscent of 2/3 star hotels we stayed at 20yrs ago while backpacking. That said, we actually really enjoyed our visit to Hotel Chindwin and we’d stay there again if we were visiting Monywa but I want to make sure others know what they should expect.||The hotel appears to have been very grand once but is run down now. Carpet worn through and lifting on the stairs, taps not working properly in bathrooms (not secured properly), our fridge didn’t work although maintenance did fix this in an odd sort of a way - it worked in the end anyway... we had no hot water the whole time we were there and when we tried to add a couple of kettles of hot water to a shallow bath to bathe in, the brand new looking kettle died! ||The whole feeling of the place was run down and a bit shabby. But it’s certainly has its charm and reminded us of our backpacking days so we found it endearing.||The food at the Rooftop bar was great - as we’re the drinks. The breakfasts in the restaurant were a bit hit and miss though. The good was pretty much always cold and dishes weren’t replenished quickly so you’d easily miss out depending on when you went.||One other thing.... we asked for a balcony room so we could sit out and watch the world go by. The first room the put us in was dark and dreary and when we pulled back the curtain it started at a brick wall. We asked again for the balcony room and the lady at reception readily agreed but warned us it could be noisy. We said that would be fine. So they gave us the only balcony room on the 5th floor - as far away from the street as possible. The room was large and airy with two large windows and s small balcony that was obviously rarely ever accessed as the door was dead bolted closed and stiff to move. We were much happier... go to day though - they weren’t kidding about the NOISE!!! The street noise was so loud we could hardly get the TV loud enough to hear it! And it went on til late in the night then started again at 4am with a parade and loudspeakers!!!! Hahaha!! ||Good thing we can sleep through anything! But it needs to be mentioned as I’m sure it would have been awful for more noise sensitive people. They did warn...
Read moreFulbright Scholar staying at Chindwin for 4 months. What a quirky, well-worn place. There are issues with this hotel and it’s certainly not a five star place BUT it’s got its charms and comforts. Upper floor corner rooms have great views with lots of windows — makes the rooms feel far larger than they are. ||||This hotel has a old-school authentic feel which far outweighs its quirks — occasional hot water issues, WiFi most but not all of the time, bizarre TV channels, and a typical but oh so repetitive breakfast. Still, the front desk folks are terrific, the restaurant is fine, the roof top bar offers the best views in town. All this and it’s probably the best priced place in Monywa. While Monywa doesn’t appear to be on the Myanmar must see list — the lucky few who get off the Yangon Mandalay Bagan trail will find something uniquely Burmese both in Monywa and Hotel Chindwin. Simply put, highly...
Read moreWe found a Booking.com offer for a budget room at Chindwin hotel but decided we preferred to see it before booking online. We turned up at the reception and showed the staff the room advertised on our mobile. The lady told us to wait a second as she had to 'discuss it with the manager. She came back shortly, saying we have to book it via app (which didn't make any sense since we were already at the hotel). As soon as we clicked 'book' the application showed the $18 room was no longer available. The next cheapest room was double the price at $33! Obviously, this room hasn't just magically got occupied within a minute the lady was gone. The manager was such incredibly unethical and cunning man that he blocked the room so that we pay more. Needless to say, with such an outrageous treatment we left the hotel...
