If it's in your budget, and especially if you have limited time, then Mountain Top Hotel has to be your choice. There are other hotels on the summit but they are not what westerners are accustomed to, and they don't necessarily have a license to accept foreign tourists.||The hotel is clean and well organised. They are used to turning over tourists who in the main stay only one night; consequently the hotel specifies 9.00am check out. They can relent on this if you ask. The reception staff are smiley and helpful.||One gets the impression that the management are very careful with overhead costs and like to have their guests organised. You are required to order your dinner 1 hour ahead of your requested dining time. The earlier you order, the better table you get. The food is good. The wait staff are extremely helpful and polite.||Our room was not luxurious but well proportioned. Some rooms have no view at all so be precise if you book independently. The bed was comfortable, no tub but a satisfactory shower. Water is precious on top of a mountain. Everything is clean and neat.||The prices are a little high for Myanmar but they do have a monopoly position. I can imagine the problems with logistics increase management expenses.||I just had the feeling that Sybil, but not Basil Fawlty had her eye on this place.||||Need to know: It is nice to be there before sunset. The Golden Rock is golden and glitters in the sun along with all the other gold of the temple/pagoda. You need to be out of your hotel room and strolling about by about 5.00pm.||||If you have time the following morning it is interesting to take a stroll for an hour or two. To the side of the Loe Loe Lay hotel there is a path to follow down some steps. The Loe Loe Lay hotel does not seem to display a sign in western script so you have to ascend to the temple plaza (?) and ask. Everyone knows the place. Down those steps you can replace your shoes, and then keep following your nose to discover first a promenade of restaurants, but then down more steps some fascinating Chinese medicine shops. The paths go off at angles and are not all obvious, just keep going, you can't get lost. You probably won't see another westerner and it's all rather fun.||||The trip from Kinpun. You may already have been told about this. The only permitted transport is by local lorry. Oh Yes! The angle of ascent is 1:4 or 1:3, that steep. You are rammed into benches until the lorry is full, and then the driver who would leave Lewis Hamilton for dust, will race up the hill. His gear changes between 1st and 2nd are lightening fast and I don't think he makes it into 3rd. Hang on tight but you can't fall out because you are wedged in between your fellow passengers. Half the Fun is Getting There! If you are travelling independently don't be put off, The arrangements are obvious and you can't go in the wrong lorry. The staff are all used to deal with we gormless tourists.||||Don't bother with the cable car- it's a white elephant. And certainly don't take it to descend because the lorry you need to complete your descent will already be full of other visitors from the peak and it will not stop.||||Enjoy your stay, you will...
Read moreOkay it’s part of the overall experience, when visiting the Golden Rock to spend the night on ( but it necessarily in) the mountain top. But with limited choice this is possibly your best option. ||The staff are extremely friendly and do their very best to make you feel welcome and nothing is too much trouble. ||Sadly we broke our veggie vows at dinner and foolishly went for fish and chicken. May be we were unlucky but both were almost inedible. Fortunately the staff seem to get it and kept bringing rice by the pot full. So we didn’t go hungry. My guess is that the veggie option might be fine as I had a French fries snack brought to the room earlier and those were fine. |Not sure what to do ? Maybe bring...
