If you look up "bed and breakfast" in a dictionary, there will be a photo of Mt. Michael Lodge. Every detail managed by Fiona and Alistair is done to perfection. They were such a joy to be around, it was like staying with family. They were quick to sit and talk with us, sharing stories about life in New Zealand. The beautiful grounds are in the middle of a private vineyard, owned by them and several adjacent property owners. |We were a party of six, occupying four rooms, and all of us found great things. The rooms were spacious, with one of us getting the self-contained suite with a washer and dryer. (Allow time for the drying, however.) They have a nice-sized pool and hot tub that we enjoyed.|When we arrived in late afternoon, Fiona and Alistair were already working on an arrival dinner, featuring BBQ'd chicken and sumptuous salmon coated in panko. Carrots and potatoes from their garden, plus a salad rounded out the dinner. I'm not sure if dinner is part of the first night routine, but it sure hit the spot with us. |The breakfasts for our three mornings were to die for. Fresh berries from their bushes were the highlight, but the omelets, poached eggs, bacon, and pancakes were all delicious. Did I mention, Alistair maintains a huge garden, and they grow almost all of the fruits and vegetables they serve? He even grafts his own tomato plants. Fiona is an outstanding chef and proudly showed off her library of cookbooks. |Alistair knows his wine and loves Central Otago Pinot Noir. He customized a winery tour and tasting in the region for one of us.|On our departure day, they filled us with ideas of stops to view as we continued our journey over to the West Coast. Everything was right on target, including the suggestion to try the whitebait sandwiches from a street cart in Haast.|Mt. Michael is not large, but that is part of its charm. I highly recommend it for anyone staying in the...
Read moreI’m rarely at a loss for words, but, I’m finding it hard to put in a sentence or two what a wonderful place you’ll find at Mt. Michael Lodge. Let’s start with the hosts, Fiona and Alistair, two of the kindest and smartest people I’ve ever met. Then there’s the spectacular, spacious and most comfortable room we’ve ever stayed in, with a post card view of Lake Dunstan and surrounding vineyards, in the heart of Otago wine country. It is the first trip that my wife and I have made to NZ, it would not be an exaggeration at all to say that if we stayed here at Mt. Michael Lodge for the entire three week trip we would not be the least bit disappointed. Do yourselves a huge favor: plan a trip to the Otago/Cromwell region of the South Island of New Zealand, and by all means possible stay at the Mt....
Read moreWe stayed at Mount Michael Lodge for 2 nights in early January 2023 as part of a trip around the South Island. ||||Fiona and Alistair were wonderful hosts, striking the perfect balance of friendly and professional.
