My 5 star review is purely for the beach and site itself, our family have been camping here around Christmas time for many many years since I was a child, its a tradition in our whanau. Some of my most memorable moments were made camping here, even my now 13 year old daughter took her first steps here, we visit the beach throughout the year to swim and gather kaimoana. Although there have been some improvements with the facilities such as the upgraded toilets, showers and shelter over the sink area, the main downfall is the on-site host, 2 years in a row he was completely rude about music, this year was the worst when in pure daylight he entered our camp site and yelled at us to turn the music off, and was so disrespectful, it was on a very low volume our kids were playing on the field. We are always respectful towards other campers when playing any music, he then continued to walk through the middle of our camp set up and I asked him, "Can I ask the reason why we need to turn it off, happy to turn it down if needed, however the crowd staying behind us the night prior were partying till after 11pm and there was no issue, it's still daylight as well" he proceeded to say because I said to turn it off, he looked as though he'd just woken from a nap, i believe he went to the neighbouring campers and told then the same thing. The following night (Christmas eve) a large group right next to us and directly in front of the hosts camper were partying late into the night, and one of the men in the group, came to our campsite and urinated directly outside the front of one of our tents. After a 2nd attempt at knocking on the hosts door he contacted the head park ranger, who attended and assisted with the situation. When camping we all go to enjoy our time with our loved ones and the last thing anyone wants is an angry disrespectful host, I do think this needs reviewing and a better system is put in place in regards to noise that suits all parties involved, cause the double standards for different groups are just not on at all. Also, some respect to families camping and their privacy when paying to stay at the site. We hope this is rectified before our next visit to the site as this is what we call our peaceful place and hope to continue this family tradition. Ngā mihi. Jasmine & Whanau.

The campground was full, the sign said. I spoke to the host, Roy, and he said people hadn't turned up and there was plenty of space if I wanted to stay. No sooner had I replied, thank you, this woman came bustling to the door of their rig, Mrs Moanie Roy? and said "I've just spoke to the council and they are going to close the campground because it's too wet." I responded that it wasn't too wet now. But the ground is, she replied, as I am standing on dry ground. "And the toilets are going to stop working, so no-one will be able to use those." How she had that premonition, who knows. Poor Roy. He seemed such a nice friendly man. I said, have a nice day and walked back to where I'd parked outside the gate. The campground had lots of dry camping spots, and the toilets were working. I decided to camp at the other secluded area away from the campground and booked online accordingly to find there were 7 spaces for that night and 19 spaces available for the following night. Auckland Council. I would change your hosts if I were you. I have given a 1 star rating for Moanie. However, I would give a 4 star for Roy, the park, toilet blocks, and the beach. Far too many judder bars as per usual would be the only downfall along with the wife lol.

This is a great Auckland camp ground. Flushing toilets, really close to the beach, lots of walks around the park, plenty of birds in the sanctuary (loved all the quails!). Close to local shops too. The beach is great for kids. No major currents to worry about. Do be warned that the incoming tide can catch you out if you're on the sand bar. Fine for adults to wade or swim back, but can get deep for young children.

The campsite is lovely, plenty of space and a lovely beach. However, the camp hosts were the rudest hosts I have encountered. They were an older couple. The man was a gentlemen who was welcoming of your group (11 males). He said we were welcome to stay and asked that we didn't make noise after 10pm. We agreed this was reasonable. The women however took one look at us and instantly treated us with disrespect and judgement. She warned us that if they hear any noise from our campsite we will be evicted and the police will be called. We were very careful not to make any noise and our site was 40m from the next closest camp group so there is no chance we were bothering anyone. Regardless of this she sent security to try and evict us within a hour of first seeing our group. Long story short security came and then the city council park manager. They both agreed that our group was quiet, well behaved and there was no reason to evict us so we were allowed to stay. The whole situation put a major dampener on the experience though. I will not be staying here again or recommending the...
