After stopping by the Japanese-owned Kohiya Coffee Shop in Whangaparaoa, we decided to explore this nearby location as well. It’s only about a 15-minute drive, and along the way, you pass by a wide, beautiful beach. As you continue, the scenery opens up to a quintessential New Zealand landscape: sprawling green pastures dotted with sheep, and an expansive, endless sky that feels like something out of a painting. One of the delightful sights along the drive is the Pukeko, a native bird with striking blue and red feathers. Pukekos are often found in wetlands and open fields, adding a touch of color and character to the landscape. They aren’t strong fliers, preferring to stroll leisurely, which makes them all the more charming. For the indigenous Maori people, the Pukeko holds special cultural significance, symbolizing a “free spirit” and a harmonious relationship with nature. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a kiwi bird in this area. As New Zealand’s national icon, the nocturnal kiwi bird can be elusive, but spotting one brings a real sense of connection to New Zealand’s unique wildlife and natural beauty. I’d love to drive this route through Whangaparaoa again, soaking in the rich scenery and culture that make New Zealand so special!

Shakespear Beach is a large sized beach in the Shakespear Regional park. It is accessible by road via Bruce Harvey Drive and ample car parking spaces are available on the premises. There is a large green area covered with trees where one can relax before or after a swim in the sea on the beach. The beach is clean and well maintained. There are toilets on the green area and water taps to have a quick shower after getting out of the sea. It is an ideal location for a short picnic on...
