Quiet, Peaceful, Views, Comfortable, Friendly - 5 words to summarise Athenree Hot Springs and Holiday Park. Stayed over a couple of nights so my teenager could go to a birthday party in Waihi. Easy to understand why the park is booked out over December and January, but a great park for any time of year as it's well sheltered and restful. Lovely BBQ area (liked the pizza oven) and well equipped main kitchen, including utensils, pots and pans. A great place for full time travelers and part-time van travelers to recharge, do the laundry and get some good meals in! Close enough to Waihi Beach township - the fish and chips, Indian Takeaways and Bakery are awesome, not to mention the Flat White Café. Island View Fish and Chips were very good and only 6 minutes away!

We had a fabulous time at Athenree Hot Springs and Holiday Park. Grant was cheerful and helpful, especially when we got stuck in a soft section of grass and we had to be pulled out. Additionally, he accommodated us in a lovely location for our second to last night in New Zealand, and was enthusiastic about the continued improvements to the park in general after we commented how phenomenal we thought it was. Seriously, the small attention to detail makes all the difference and this place has nailed it. There are custom poster boards with their logo on the base, so you know they made them personally, providing information about local birds, park etiquette, and general information. They are all fabulous. There are wee towels to wipe down surfaces when you are done in the bathroom and kitchen, so you always come into a clean dry environment, that is if the person before has read the instructions! The pools themselves were lovely to soak in, and, although not following the directions, it was nice to see so many kids having fun in the big pool. We also utilised the kitchen and the amenities were excellent. Kids were having fun on the trampoline, and driving karts around on the pathways, and it seemed that everyone was having a good time at Athenree. The only possible improvement, and nothing really to do with Athenree itself, would be some kind of walking access to the beach. So, in a nutshell, on our next trip from Canada, we would deliberately head to Athenree rather than stumble into it as we did this...

We were in our own self contained motor home alongside friends who were in a caravan. For me it was a return trip and that is always a good indicator that you have enjoyed the first time round. Whilst we were / are self contained, we did get to use the bathroom and toilet facilities and I have to say when you walk in the hand basins just gleam brightly - clean bathroom facilities are a must wherever you stay and I can assure you that Athenree Hot Springs certainly ticks that box. Whilst I didn't use the kitchen I did go and have a look in it and it was equally as sparkling clean with plenty of guest fridge space and freezer space. This is not a large camp and there are number of permanent onsite caravans alongside cabins and tent and van spaces. It is so close if you have transport to visit other local sites such as Waihi and Katikati, and if you go to Katikati don't hesitate to visit the Bird gardens - such a delightful place to spend a couple of hours and the $14 was money well spent. Athenree is such a convenient place to base yourself. Finally the jewel in the crown would have to be the hot pools and they are such a pleasure. There is nothing like a long hot soak at any time of the day so seriously consider putting this holiday park on your list...
